GARNETT, KS (KCTV) - A 13-year-old Kansas eighth-grader says he was suspended from school on Wednesday because he refused to take off his Vera Bradley purse.

His furious mother says it is discrimination because girls are allowed to have purses with no repercussions.

"I don't think everyone should be treated differently," Skylar Davis said. "Everyone should have the same privileges."

Anderson County School District officials did not respond to KCTV5's repeated efforts to get a comment.

Skylar is a student at Anderson County Senior-Junior School. He said he has been carrying the colorful fabric Vera Bradley bag over his shoulder for some time with no issues.

"It expresses myself and I think everyone else can wear it, so I wear it as well," Skylar told KCTV5's Dave Jordan.

He was summoned to Assistant Principal Don Hillard's office after he wouldn't take it off.

"I went to the office and I refused to take it off, and they suspended me," the teen explained.

School personnel then called his mother, Leslie Willis, to come get her son.

"I was a little furious, and I called the school [and spoke to Hillard] to reverify the story, and yeah, he refused to take off his Vera Bradley bag, nothing more to do it," Willis said.

She said she reviewed the student handbook but did not see a mention to bags or purses. She questions the suspension and the timing.

"Skylar has been going to school since August with that same Vera Bradley bag on, hasn't taken it off. What is the problem?" she asked.

She said she supports her son and his choices. She said if he wants to carry a Vera Bradley purse or any other type of bag that he should be able to do so without being punished.

KCTV5 left messages for Hillard on his office and cell phone. He wasn't at home Wednesday night.

Dakota Haight said the situation with his brother is unfair.

"I've seen girls wear short shorts. Why don't they get kicked out? But then he gets kicked out for a purse? That doesn't make sense. It's not right," Haight said.

Willis said she was told that the suspension wouldn't be lifted until Skylar stops wearing the purse, which he says he won't do.

Go Skylar!

Of course, the odds are probably greater than 50/50 that they'll just ban all purses rather than admit this little smart alec has them over a barrel.

OK...I'm very confused about this.

He's carrying a bag? I'm guessing something that holds some stuff in it for him. Bags, Purses, Fanny packs, Backpacks or any other type of these objects are not against school rules according to the mother's reading of the handbook.

Other students are carrying a similar type of bag without issue.

And the problem with this is????

Because it has flowers on it? So it makes him look gay? Is he suspending for looking or portraying or being homosexual? Or because his fashion-sense does not conform to normal 8th grade boys?

I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND WTF IS THE PROBLEM HERE!!!!!!!!!

WHAT SPECIFICALLY GOT HIM SUSPENDED? Looking awkward? Strange fashion choice? Being Gay? Wearing an accessory mainly worn by female classemates?

Are any of these suspendable actions?

If the character was missing from Raiders the outcome of the plot would have been exactly the same.

Indiana Jones plays no role in the outcome of the story. If he weren’t in the film, it would turn out exactly the same… If he weren’t in the movie, the Nazis would still have found the Ark, taken it to the island, opened it up, and all died, just like they did.

So sorry you know nothing about story, Eduardo; there's a bit more to it than that.

IF the Nazis had all died, without Indy around, then the Ark would have been lost forever. However, Jones was there and saved the Ark because he had a brain or two.

Also, the story has a double ending. Indy saves the Ark from one Empire only to have it stolen by another Empire.

They give you an outline of rules, often times called a planner, that you sign at the beginning of the year. Part of it covers anything deemed by an administrator to be distracting. It's how you get students being suspended for NRA shirts and the like. Some schools are more strict than others.

I understand they give you said handbook. But if "other" people (yes I know they're women) are allowed to carry similar bags they've got a discrimination case just asking for a big settlement. The NRA shirt could be looked at differently as long as they suspend everyone with that type of shirt on....even if you disagree with it.

I don't understand, isn't this type of thing what schools were designed for? Forcing people to change their individual identities so that they can more easily achieve the collective ideals. They do it for earrings as well. Girls are allowed to have their ears pierced, boys aren't. I got my ear pierced and got suspended no sooner than five minutes after I walked through the doors. My mom talked to a lawyer about my options and he cited some vague Board of Education policy that allows them to enact/enforce whatever rules they wished. They also cited that because I signed my planner, for which I wasn't even aware was anything aside from it being returned to me if lost, that I forfeited any right to challenge their rules.

Aside from everyone being treated as above everyone as a result of their feelings being conceivably hurt, there is no way a lawsuit is coming from this. He can play the, "they hurt his feelings," card and perhaps gain sympathy to where to issue an apology and allow him to carry the purse, but they'll simply cite unintended administrator overreach as a result of the litany of rules and 'zero tolerance' enactments. Much the way some schools have apologized to men who see themselves as women not being allowed to wear a dress to homecoming. Twenty-first century 'problems,' I tell ya.

Are you from the ghetto or the Deep South? I'm from a fairly small town and nothing of the sort ever happened.

Where is your town and how old are you?

You're both missing the real point. Indiana Jones is simply Han Solo hallucinating while he was in carbon sleep.

For proof notice C3P0 and R2D2 in his dreams.

Ha. I have never heard that explanation before.

That might be worse than the purse. That show is the same stupid 'nerds adapting awkwardly to society/relationships/friends/etc.' joke 30,000 times an episode.

Haha yeah the show sucks, but my girlfriend was watching it on tv a couple days ago.

Its worse than that; its what nonnerds think nerds are supposed to be like. The limited amount I've seen it, the actors come off as gay more than as nerds.

Indiana Jones is awesome.

There is no end to how I have come to despise certain elements of American life. The stupidity is insufferable at times. What is worse is the general aire of tolerance. It just amazes me that tens of millions of people think so little of their children to place them into these horrid schools.

Well the guy who plays Sheldon is gay and I think the Indian guy is purposely written as super gay.

Well see, its a show about gays, not nerds. I'll admit to being pretty much a nerd; it kinda offends me.

Raj isn't gay, he just can't talk to women. He gets drunk a lot for the purpose of talking to women.

He can talk to women now sober. He's super feminine, though, borderline homosexual.

Is this in the most recent season? Because I haven't watched some of the newer episodes. I know he told his parents a while back that he was "metrosexual," meaning that he apparently likes women and their skin care products.

I don't watch it often, but yeah I think it happened this season. I usually just watch when my girlfriend is watching tv and I'm too lazy to argue about what to watch :p

Ever since I wasted 114 minutes of my life watching E.T. (the worst movie ever made) I've boycotted all Spielberg movies.

I see your E.T. and raise you Manos: The Hands of Fate.

I've only read 3 of 11 pages.. so pardon if this has been said

this sounds like the principal was more annoyed with insubordination than fashion.. I think had the kid been wearing a hat and said no to taking it off, he'd be in just as big a pickle - but without the press.

Is this boy gay, or does he just like feminine looking purses? Either way they should let him wear it if he isn't carrying anything illegal in it. However if he chose to do this to get attention and get suspended, then he has accomplished his goals. Considering how much I hated school, I wouldn't consider getting suspended punishment at all.

How has that helped you? Yes public school sucks, but many private schools also suck.

My brother still makes fun of me for having endured one year of public school (kindergarten). It was decent school though in a district with an average household income north of $150,000.

My only "public school" experience was two weeks in the summer when I was 15. There was a two week drivers education class that was faster than a private driving school. I remember coming home and saying to my mom:

"It's a bunch of kids sitting in rows in front of a blackboard with a teacher droning on and on- how does anyone learn like that?"

She just laughed.
