Thousands of would-be predators asked a girl to perform sex acts online unaware that she was actually a computer-generated digital decoy named “Sweetie” created by a charity.

In little more than two months, more than 1,000 people were identified by children’s rights group Terre des Hommes after they offered money to the fake profile for a variety of sex acts. They included 254 Americans.

Overall, almost 20,000 people made approaches to the virtual girl — who was modeled on a 10-year-old — but the charity was unable to track them all down.

“The child predators doing this now feel that the law doesn’t apply to them,” said Hans Guyt, director of campaigns at Terre des Hommes Netherlands. “The Internet is free, but not lawless.”

And a 10 year old computer at that. That's really old for a computer.

Only government can fix this problem.

We're all victims. Everybody hurts. :/

Entrapment, especially if the decoy was wearing revealing clothing or saying suggestive things.

Details are important, but I can't shake the feeling that this group is doing a good thing.

But as a parent, nobody will ever have access to my daughter online without me knowing. If all parents were as responsible as me there would be no problems.

Of course there would be no problems if parents were being parents, that's why we need less laws, and give people more responsibility.

Bwaaa! Troll technique number 7: Play dumb.

If I had the inclination, I'd go over to DU and out your ass. Feel lucky that the libertarian approach does not get you banned like the sensitive pansies at your forum.

and give people more responsibility.

What?

Nobody ever assumed the responsibility that was mine, and nobody will ever get it. And nobody gets to define the extent of my responsibilities.

You must be confused because responsibility isn't handed out like candy. Responsibility is only initiated and maintained by an individual.

Some people have it, others don't.

That's why I don't cry for people who are less fortunate than me. They didnt earn the things i have.

And if you don't monitor your child and proactively ensure its well being, then you don't deserve sympathy when some bad shit happens.

sorry, that's basically what I meant, force people to take responsibility, rather than nanny and protect them.

If you want to be that technical, it would not be illegal to offer adults (cops pretending to be kids) money for sex either.

But they didn't think it was a computer, now did they? So these pervs should be left alone until they actually victimize a real kid? And then I'm sure people will scream that the government/law enforcement knew the perpetrator was a child-seeking pedophile, and didn't do anything beforehand.

Yes, they should, that's the price of freedom, that people are allowed to be left alone until they actually victimize people. Yes, I know whiney liberals and tight ass religious nuts will cry for big government when it hits home on their personal favorite issues, but their personal opinion has no bearing on everybody's freedom. They don't get to use government to restrict pedophiles just because they're insecure and scared.

equivalent to watching porn or playing an automated video game, it's sick to think that that may be the next step to trample on personal freedoms in the name of stopping pedophiles.

Oh, you're a poster over there, alright. Better stay off for the next day or two because I might be over there.

You're probably familiar with the idea that intentions no longer matter. It's not what you intended, but it's how I react. That is the legacy of liberal girly men.

Is it even legal for any computer or computer program to "virtually" pose as an underage girl and discus/offer/talk about underage sex? Sounds like an automated money maker for an entrepreneur (but if there are pictures, it's certainly illegal but possibly still harmless?) or it's amother gov-entrapment sure-thing express quick-trip ticket into the ole' rape cage (federal prison)?

Sweetie could also be a male Sonny Pot (honey pot) that could work just like Red Light or Speed Cameras do for traffic laws, a ticket/fine is automatically mailed to the lawbreaker who, in this case probably is a pedophile lured to the website.

(It might be a good idea to know exactly where they live and if this virtual activity always keeps them off the streets and away from our kids in real life, maybe society is better off overall.)

Under the theory of thought crime and pre-crime, the government can pull just about anything. So yes, while it's not what we're used to hearing, a computer entrapping a person, that's basically what's happening now.
