DETROIT, MI -- Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is scheduled to speak at a Detroit Economic Club meeting on Dec. 6.
The club announced this week that Paul intends to "unveil his new legislative proposal to remove bankrupt Detroit and other economically blighted areas from poverty and the shackles of big government."
Paul said in August after the Congressional Black Caucus called for a federal aid for Detroit that he wanted to craft a "Republican alternative" to any aid package.
The White House last month announced a $300 million Detroit aid plan made up primarily of expedited, previously awarded federal grants and private contributions to be overseen by a U.S. Treasury official.
Paul is expected to unveil a proposal that "that gets government out of the way and provides new opportunities for prosperity" according to the economic club.
"Apparently in Detroit, there’s 46 pages of regulations for setting up a business, and everywhere you go, you’re paying off somebody or paying a legalized bribe to get your business license,” Paul said in an August radio interview. "You have to eliminate all that red tape and so it has [to] be a low-tax or a tax-free zone, and a regulation-free zone, and just do it because it’s blighted."
