Opening a new front in the city’s war on smoking, the New York City Council voted Wednesday to hike the legal age for buying cigarettes to 21.

Mayor Bloomberg promised to sign the bill, making it certain that New York will become the first major city in America to adopt such a high age requirement.

I think people should smoke all they want, without tax on cigarettes. However, I think they should not burden other people with their future health problems as a result of smoking.

All despots use children as soldiers. And it will be for the police too, not just the military. It's already part of the militarization of the Police. Younger and younger LEOs.

As a smoker, this is how I see it. Other people aren't responsible for my unhealthy choices.

This will surely slow down the HUGE black market in New York City where cigarettes go for ~$18 a pack (seriously) in the stores and $5 on the street.

I'm fine with that,, as long as I am not burdened with anyone's health problems for any reason whatsoever.

Cancer, heart conditions,, back problems, Flu, etc.

20, 19 and 18 year olds aren't minors though. You can marry at 13 and join the Army at 17.

Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah have raised the purchasing age to 19. I am not surprised that NYC is following AL and AK into this type of statism.

Understood. But unless one has full and equal rights then my point still stands. Either one is considered an adult with the personal responsibility that goes with it or one is not.

When the tobacco industrial complex has been putting phosphorus fertilizers with radiation on all of the tobacco for the last 80 years, is it any wonder people get cancer from smoking cigarettes?


^This statement needs to be made before people say stuff about tobacco users burdening other people with their health problems!!

What a bunch of butt-heads!

The City Council voted Wednesday to raise the age for buying tobacco and e-cigarettes from 18 to 21 — without bothering to restrict the sale of pipes and bongs that are used to smoke marijuana.

So while young adults won’t be able to legally purchase coffin nails, they’ll still be able to blow their minds with weed.

The anti-smoking legislation — part of Mayor Bloomberg’s war on Big Tobacco — is supposed to keep kids from getting hooked on the cancer-causing habit. But more teens currently smoke pot than cigarettes, according to the federal government’s National Institute on Drug Abuse.

In its latest annual survey, 23 percent of high-school seniors reported getting high in the past month, while only 17 percent said they had puffed on cigarettes, an all-time low.

Under state law, selling pot paraphernalia is illegal, but retailers get around the ban by posting signs saying their wares are intended for tobacco use only.

They need to do something to collect the taxes they're not paying because of the decrease in cigarette tax.

This is excellent news for New Hampshire businesses. NY is the state where the highest percentage of smokes come from out of state. The thing that wasn't' clear in the article to me:

So if you're over 18 and purchase outside of NYC, can you get "busted" for smoking in NYC underage?!?

You cannot run for President until 35 so...

The requirements for president are specifically stated in the Constitution. Since the age of smoking and drinking is not mentioned in the Constitution, 18-20 year olds should be covered under the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States".

I think the Real Goal is to make Tobacco completely Illegal so they can have a whole new War on Drugs, and it is planned to be a total failure from the start. More Laws means more Victims of Govt.
