California is technology's spiritual home in the US, where Teslas roam free, and Google Glass is already a social norm. Well, unless you're a member of the San Diego law enforcement that is -- as one unlucky driver just found out. That commuter was Cecilia Abadie, and she's (rather fittingly) taken to Google+ after being given a ticket for driving while wearing her (soon to be upgraded) Explorer Edition. The official charge is "Driving with Monitor visible to Driver (Google Glass)" meaning even CHiPS know full well what's the latest word in wearable tech. Abadie posted the message in the hope that someone with local smarts might be able to clarify the legal merit of the ticket. We're staying out of it, but if you know your California state laws, then jump on the source and get in the mix. In the meantime, at least our protagonist still has the tools to complete her commute.

A Google Glass Explorer named Cecilia Abadie ran afoul of the California Highway Patrol last night, and came away with*a ticket for distracted driving. The culprit? Her Google Glass, which the officer saw as equivalent to driving with a TV screen blocking her view. The consequences for Abadie are likely to be minor, but the incident raises lingering questions about the legal status of Glass on the road at a time when the device is moving ever closer to mainstream use.

The main item on the ticket is for speeding, so it seems likely Abadie wasn't pulled over specifically for wearing Glass, but it's a sign of how far many institutions still have to go before they're willing to accept everyday use. While proponents claim the device doesn't distract drivers, both Delaware and West Virginia have passed laws against using Glass and other wearables on the road. In Abidie's case, the relevant law may have been a state ordinance against viewing monitors installed in a driver's field of vision, although absent any court ruling, it's still unclear whether the law applies to Google Glass.

So much for all those "Heads-Up" displays, lane monitoring displays, rear camera screens...

So, the thought police use their low level conjecture with zero evidence to write a revenue ticket off of Google glass? Stage Coach Robbers... some things never change.

I think there's another motive... recording what's going on around you, catching revenue speed trap locations, and evidence against the state apparatus roadway operations for revenue.

I really really want to say "I am glad the woman got a ticket" because I despise both the privacy invasive concept of Google Glass as well as the stupidity of drivers that drive distracted, but I have to bite my tongue and back off. There was NO VICTIM so there can be NO CRIME. However, if Driving with Google Glass caused an accident and or injury, it should be a Civil matter, not Criminal, even a Misdemeanor.

Some time ago I had shared a few thoughts on the coming war against photography as well as specific sources to demonstrate it's quiet progress. Is very important to pay attention to how things are playing out. Can't wait until the first shots are fired to hurry up and give a damn all of a sudden. Not you, per se, Matthew5...just speaking generally.

Maybe do a forum search for "The Coming War on Photography" to better understand current events. If you find anything relevant to this report (which I know you will because I put them there) then please add here to this thread if it's something that you believe is important and worthy of further scrutiny. These postings were long before we actually had a science and tech sub-forum. Valuable information regarding this stuff as well as processes that come with it is scattered all over the boards. And with little to no response. Which is unfortunate.

Seems like symbolically standing around and drinking Super Big Gulps for the other camera is where priorities lay and really only serve to deflect the issue away from scientific relevance in scope so expect no relevant position from our reps regarding this or other technology or processes that are relevant to it/them at the moment...if at all. It must be meme season among political socialites or something. Who knows.

Google Glass is not your friend. This is a red-on-red incident.

How the fuck does a cop notice that?

It appears that she was initially pulled over for speeding (as best I can tell from the citation) and then the cop probably noticed the Google Glass. One of the commenters noted that it's a citation because it's a video-capable device, i.e. it can show YouTube videos while driving. That's what makes it different from a driver information device.
