A change to the Marine Corps’ uniform hats could take the hard-nosed Leathernecks from the Halls of Montezuma to the shops of Christopher Street.

Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a "unisex" look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps - known as "covers" - with a new version that some have derided as so “girly” that they would make the French blush.

"We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!" one senior Marine source fumed to The Post. "The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous."

The thin new covers have a feminine line that some officials think would make them look just as good on female marines as on males - in keeping with the Obama directive.

"The Marine Corps is being 'encouraged' by DoD to standardize on a unisex/universal dress and service cap," Marine brass noted in an internal memo obtained by The Post.

Male and female Marines currently wear gender-specific caps.

I remember the "new" uniform. It came out in the late '60s. Those had some sort of plastic in them and when it was burning, it would stick to your skin. You couldn't get it off without pulling it over your head and it was a miserable substitute for the chambray shirt and bell bottoms. As long as they were letting us wear the old uniform, I did so. It was more comfortable and you could actually turn your pant legs up to your knees when swabbing the deck. Those new ones were nasty and didn't look half as good either.

There's no way you can justify anything that modern America is doing overseas. Yet many Christians have a love affair with the military. I think if that love affair is ever going to end, the military will have to become anti-Christian first. I don't see anything wrong with the new cover. I honestly don't like the cover we have, it's a pain in the ass to get it to look right and transport without ruining the frame. You pretty much have to invest in a cover case.

Nothing about the uniforms they march in conveys toughness to me. It's fruity from head to toe, whether they shave a few inches off the hat or not. The only thing it conveys to me is obedience and protected class. If they want a tough looking hat get them some trucker caps or cowboy hats.

I actually like that one , fairly serviceable ; keeps heat from escaping in winter , sheds rain and sun , not too large to catch brush.Still enough visibility for proper call for fire and marksmanship, in a pinch can still dip water with it, not a color that catches/reflects light.Not bad.
