For these smaller races (House and smaller) we'll need someone to provide some insight on the candidate's prospects of winning the nomination. In this case, Emmer probably has some name recognition from his 2010 run for Governor and from his time as a state rep... but it would be helpful for people who know this race better to chime in, since his primary opponents all seem to be similarly credentialed (state reps and senators).

Bump - does anyone know anything about Emmer? Would like to get a conversation going.

5 star. Good name recognition, running a strong campaign, can unite Bachmann supporters & MN liberty movement.

Tom Emmer introduced Ron Paul at a Minnesota rally:

He has made the Colbert Show, for better or worse. Will this bite him?

From a thread about one of our own possibly running for this seat...where's teh Collins?

But I only desire to put time and effort behind those who, while we may not agree on every issue, have a basic understanding of liberty. About Emmer, while he may have grown since his last campaign, and I like a lot about him, I'll have to still give him the (admittedly backhanded) praise that I often do for decent non-liberty types, that he's a "good conservative."

Another thread from the past about Emmer. Not terribly complimentary:

From what I can gather, Emmer is a strong fiscal conservative and also a social conservative.

No telling where he stands other than that. His website has no discussion of issues. No idea where he would stand on foreign policy.

I don't know that much about him to be honest.

I thought maybe you had met him while in MN.

I have. I think he's a liberty-leaning conservative, but I don't think he's a full on liberty guy. I could be wrong though, I don't know him that well.

Except for the fact that Emmer isn't really a liberty candidate. As a state representative, he voted against legalizing medical marijuana in Minnesota. At best, he'll be a fiscal hawk. He is rated 100% by Minnesota Majority, a conservative group.
