The renowned British street artist, who keeps his identity secret, is doing a month-long “residency” in New York, using the city’s walls as his canvas.

But Blooomberg, known for his philanthropic generosity to the arts, said he’s unimpressed, WCBS 880′s Rich Lamb reported.

“Graffiti does ruin people’s property and is a sign of decay and a loss of control,” Bloomberg said.

“Art is art, and nobody’s a bigger supporter of the arts than I am,” he added. “I just think there are some places for art, and there are some places (for) no art. And you running up to someone’s property or public property and defacing it is not my definition of art.”

Banksy posts his latest artwork on his website and on Instagram, and fans have been flocking to see his graffiti. On Tuesday, he painted a 9/11 tribute in TriBeCa.

His work has sold for millions to the likes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. But no one has ever so much as confirmed his real name.

The graffiti looks better than when the city attempts to paint over it and can't match the color of the wall. So instead of art, you're left with a big square.

Would you rather have this:

People who are art fanatics dismiss Banksy as being too simple, but I think he is the only artist that I come close to "getting." This is freaking awesome:

So basically if Bloomberg hasn't completely signed off on everything that happens in his precious Gotham City there's hell to pay.

I'm a fan of what I've seen of his.

Are the property owners filing complaints? If not I don't think there was a crime committed. I'd guess most would be honored to get free art from a well known artist. His stuff has sold for big bucks.

If his work has sold for millions he can afford his own canvas or at least ask permission of the property owners where he paints.

I have to agree with that.

Is he the one making the millions or is it the property owners?

Meh, I am willing to put it in the category of civil disobedience. All of those buildings were built from the banks creating loans by creating money out of thin air, de-valueing everybody else's money.

On top of that, the central banking system encourages people via economic disparity to move to the city and live in those rat cages and the individuals who live in said rat cages don't even own the building and don't have a say - and he is educational in that his art makes people think.

So he does stuff other that painting other people's property? I'd also imagine the graffiti probably increases the property value so it isn't like they gain nothing from it.

Not only that, the people that get paid to paint over the graffiti then use their money to buy meat from the butcher and bread from the baker and fish from the fishmonger thus enriching the entire community.

Sort of a 21st century take on the broken window fallacy.

No.

More like people trapped in their rat cages are psychologically inhibited due to their lack of being able to express themselves into the distraught looking buildings around them and banksy helps express their humanity for them because he is a risk-taker with a lot of ideas and images to create and express. He also creates nice looking things for the people who live there to look at while in their rat cages.

So,if some up and coming graffiti artist, from NYC say, decided that the people of Santa Barbara were "trapped in their rat cages and are psychologically inhibited due to their lack of being able to express themselves into the distraught looking" cars around them and graffitied up your car without your permission, you would have no problem with that?

Bear in mind that the auto-paint job joint that repainted it for you would spend that money he earned at the local markets, thus enriching your community.

I can't believe i'm saying this, but i agree with Bloomberg,If hes painting on buildings, without the owners permission, then i don't care how great it looks, its graffiti and he should be discouraged from doing it.

Which is unfortunate and rather ignorant. :( There are plenty of well-known classical and contemporary artistic styles that favor simplicity and/or elegance over complexity.

Matisse stuff is very simple:

but sells for loads of FRNs at art sales.
