JK Rowling has indicated that she intends to vote against Scottish independence in the 2014 referendum, saying: "I'm pro-union."

Her comment comes in a wide-ranging interview today to promote her new novel, The Casual Vacancy, her first adult book since the Harry Potter series, which is published on Thursday.
The Guardian interviewer writes of Rowling: "She is not so private that she won't say which way she'll vote in the Scottish referendum – 'I'm pro union."
It is thought to be the first time that the Edinburgh-based author has made such a declaration, although she is a known friend of Sarah and Gordon Brown, and made a £1m donation to the UK Labour party in 2008.
Leaders of the Better Together campaign are expected to welcome today's comment, however brief, given that the pro-independence campaign have paraded an array of Scottish celebrities to back their cause.

I know this doesn't necessarily concern us Americans, but I'm genuinely disappointed. I support any challenge to an illegitmate union such as the UK's where in 1707, the Scottish Parliament voted for the union against the will of the majority of the people. I also suppose I am biased since I'm of Irish descent and my family hasn't forgotten about Ireland's "union" with England.

So, I'm disappointed.

As my Scottish and various UK amigos have explained it to me, independence isn't really popular in Scotland. ~sigh~

Truly? Do they depend on the UK government so much that freedom has lost its appeal?

I'm just glad Ireland got is independence before it was too late, then.

For the handful that I've talked to, yes. I can't speak for the entire region, though. Aren't the Irish welfare recipients of the EU nowadays? I've lost track. Those wascally Europeans.

I wonder if J.K. Rowling has ever watched Braveheart (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112573/)...

That^^ Love RP, but he was dead wrong about freedom being popular (in a meaningful sense).

Muggle guilt.

She's not comfortable with her own success squeezing to the top of the system so how could she possibly encourage the Scotts?

Me too.

It's the only significant disagreement I have with his philosophy.

Ron Paul is just too good of a person to comprehend how hopeless many human beings can be.

The Irish and other PIIGS nations have been at the center of Eurozone woes a good long time now.

This is over a year old. Most celebs are either neutral or anti-independence.

Independence is winning... how do we know? because the undecideds grow everyday. Those are not pro-independence people becoming disillusioned, they are anti-independence people who are reconsidering thanks to the excellent arguments put forward by the YES Scotland campaign.

Why is that?

The polling so far is in line with the SNP landslide of 2011 (they were down by 8-12 points in pre-election polls) and also the last Devolution referendum, where that was expected to lose.

What's the big deal?

She's a free citizen. She can support whichever side she wants. She prefers to remain a part of Great Britain. So what?

I'm pretty sure she isn't the only one who feels that way.

Not everyone in Scotland is getting tanked, watching "Braveheart" re-runs and running into the street yelling "FREEDOM!," as I'm pretty sure conditions for the Scots have improved significantly in the past 700 years.

If it hadn't been for Scotland becoming part of the UK I probably wouldn't exist. Ancestors left Scotland..populated the Ulster Plantations in N.Ireland and when they got screwed over by the King of England left and came here. But to understand how convoluted their history with the British has been takes some reading. Scotland has always been occupied in one way or another.

It doesn't exactly inspire confidence in our own future here in 'Murica to see how servile and pathetic our parent countries have become, does it? :(

Meh. All those peoples have gone through tons of changes in their existence. Like everything else, ebbs and flows happen, bro. Don't get too romantic about the mystique of the "Old World".
