From the coalition group StopWatching.us (https://rally.stopwatching.us/), of which DownsizeDC.org is a part:

Right now the NSA is spying on everyone's personal communications, and they’re operating without any meaningful oversight. Since the Snowden leaks started, more than 569,000 people from all walks of life have signed the StopWatching.us petition (https://optin.stopwatching.us/) telling the U.S. Congress that we want them to rein in the NSA.

On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the US Patriot Act, we're taking the next step and holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing the half-million petitions to Congress to remind them that they work for us — and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.

We invite you to get involved...

•Go to StopWatching.us to read and sign the petition (https://optin.stopwatching.us/)

•Get information about the rally here. (https://rally.stopwatching.us/)

And if you are able to attend the rally, RSVP here (http://stopwatchingusrally.eventbrite.com/).

If you'd like to help someone else attend and get some perks, learn more here (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/stop-watching-us-a-rally-against-nsa-surveillance-on-october-26th--2).

Announcing the Rally Against Mass Surveillance

18 Sep 2013

The recent NSA revelations have laid it all out: The NSA is watching us online and on our phones. The NSA has corrupted security and cryptography, undermining the fabric of the Internet. Its overreaching surveillance is creating a climate of fear, chills free speech, and violates our basic human rights — and it operates without any meaningful oversight.

But a movement is building to change all this. And we're about to take the next step.

On Saturday, October 26 — the 12th anniversary of the signing of the USA PATRIOT Act — thousands of people from across the political spectrum will unite in Washington, D.C. to proclaim: Enough is enough. Stop watching us.

StopWatching.Us is a diverse coalition including more than 100 public advocacy organizations and companies from across ideological lines, including the ACLU, Access, Demand Progress, Electronic Frontier Foundation, FreedomWorks, Fight for the Future, Free Press, Mozilla, reddit, Restore the Fourth and Thoughtworks. This coalition is working to organize the biggest mass protest of the NSA’s surveillance programs to date. Will you join us?

Hundreds of thousands of people have spoken out since the major NSA leaks began this June. More than 560,000 people took action at StopWatching.Us by signing our petition to the U.S. Congress. Dozens of members of Congress have introduced bills aimed at reining in the NSA, and hundreds of organizations and companies are uniting to end the NSA's unconstitutional surveillance.

But we will only succeed if we take the next step and raise our voices.

At the StopWatching.Us rally on October 26, we’ll remind our elected officials that they work for us, not the NSA. We are demanding a full Congressional investigation of America’s surveillance programs, reform to federal surveillance law, and accountability from public officials responsible for hiding this surveillance from lawmakers and the public. And we will personally deliver the half million petition signatures to Congress.

This will be the biggest rally for privacy the U.S. has ever seen. Will you be there?

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s happening?
The Rally Against Mass Surveillance includes a march and a rally.

When is this happening?
We will rally and march on Sat., Oct. 26 between 12 noon and 3 p.m.

Where are the activities happening?
Marchers gather at Union Station (in Columbus Circle) and will proceed to Union Square (on 3rd Street and Madison Dr. NW in front of the Capitol Reflecting Pool) where the rally will take place. Check out this map that pinpoints Columbus Circle and Union Square.

How do I find accomodation?
We've set up a list of accomodation options to help.

Why rally?
Right now the NSA is spying on everyone's personal communications, and it’s operating without any meaningful oversight. Since the Snowden leaks started, more than 569,000 people from all walks of life have signed the StopWatching.us petition telling the U.S. Congress that we want it to the NSA accountable and to reform the laws that got us here.

On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Patriot Act, we're taking the next step and holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing the half-million petitions to members of Congress to remind them that they work for us — and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.

Who’s rallying?
We expect thousands of people from across the political spectrum will attend the rally. We will draw attendees primarily from the DC metro area and locations within approximately 8 hours from DC.

Attendees will join members of the StopWatching.us coalition, which includes more than 100 public advocacy organizations and companies from across the political spectrum. We came together in June 2013 to demand the U.S. Congress investigate the full extent of the NSA's spying programs. Go here to read our letter to U.S. Congress demanding accountability and reform.

Members of the StopWatching.us coalition include the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Free Press, Freedom Works, ACLU, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Restore the Fourth, Center for Democracy and Technology, Demand Progress, Mozilla, Public Knowledge, Fight for the Future, Access, Libertarian Party, the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and more. See the full list.

What’s the point of the rally?
We want the U.S. Congress to rein in the NSA. Specifically, we call on Congress to immediately and publicly:

1. Enact reform this Congress to Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the state secrets privilege, and the FISA Amendments Act to make clear that blanket surveillance of the Internet activity and phone records of any person residing in the U.S. is prohibited by law and that violations can be reviewed in adversarial proceedings before a public court;
2. Create a special committee to investigate, report, and reveal to the public the extent of this domestic spying.
3. This committee should create specific recommendations for legal and regulatory reform to end unconstitutional surveillance;
4. Hold accountable those public officials who are found to be responsible for this unconstitutional surveillance.

If I want to come into town for the lobby day, when should I arrive?
If you are coming from out of town, you should plan to arrive in D.C. on Thursday night (October 24th) so you can join us for lobby day trainings on Friday morning.

Will there be trainings before the lobby day?
Yes. On Friday morning, legal experts and trainers will give you an overview of NSA surveillance, including talking points and handouts, and prepare you to meet with staffers. Then you will meet with key Hill staffers and elected officials to explain your concerns about NSA surveillance. Don't worry - we schedule the meetings for you.

What time will the lobby day be over?
We’ll be done by mid afternoon.

Where will the lobby day training take place?
RSVP on this page and we'll send you information with the exact location.

I'm on the fence about attending the lobby day on Friday. Is it really worthwhile?
Yes. In person meetings are the most effective way for an individual to influence Congress on an issue (except maybe giving them a lot of money). Even if you've never considered lobbying on an issue, this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to help change America’s stance on surveillance.

What do I need to bring / wear for the lobby day?:
We will provide and discuss with you the materials to give to your congressional offices. We recommend dressing "business casual" for the lobby day.

Need more info?

NSA Opponents Will Picket Congress on Patriot Act's Birthday

Organizers believe Saturday rally will be the largest ever against domestic surveillance

By STEVEN NELSON
October 21, 2013

A diverse group will gather near the U.S. Capitol on Saturday to denounce the government's dragnet phone and Internet surveillance programs revealed in June by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

The date is the 12th anniversary of President George W. Bush signing into law the USA Patriot Act, which with approval from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court allowed years of hushed data collection by the National Security Agency.

"We're expecting this to be the largest privacy-related rally – potentially – in U.S. history," said Evan Greer, campaign manager of Fight for the Future, an Internet policy group that's helping organize the event. "We are expecting thousands of people to come out to D.C. The rally has been endorsed by over a hundred organizations, from the far left to the far right."

Among the event sponsors are the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Mozilla Foundation, the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, social news website Reddit, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Demand Progress and Students for Liberty.

"It's exciting to see so many different groups coming together... groups that normally never would be sitting in the same room or at the same rally are working together on this issue," Greer said. "This is an incredibly politically diverse coalition uniting around the issue of government surveillance and recognizing the threat that it poses to our most basic rights, like freedom of speech, freedom of expression and privacy."

Join the Largest Privacy Protest Ever This Weekend

Peter Rothberg on October 23, 2013 - 3:28 PM ET

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGmiw_rrNxk

US Representative John Conyers Jr., Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and actor Maggie Gyllenhaal join a chorus of prominent voices calling for an end to mass suspicionless surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA) in a new short video released by the StopWatching.us coalition.

The video is a call to action released in support of the Stop Watching Us: Rally Against Mass Surveillance being held in Washington, DC, on Saturday, October 26, the twelfth anniversary of the Patriot Act. Formed in June 2013, the StopWatching.us coalition comprises more than 100 public advocacy organizations from across the political spectrum demanding that Congress investigate the full extent of the NSA’s spying programs.

The protest should be the largest privacy protest in the history of the republic. The demand is for a full congressional investigation of America’s surveillance programs, reform to federal surveillance law and accountability from public officials responsible for hiding this surveillance from lawmakers and the public. Sign the coalition’s petition and find out how you can support the campaign, whether or not you can get to DC on October 26.

Edward Snowden releases statement, encourages people to attend.

Edward Snowden: This Saturday, Demand an End to the Surveillance State

By Noa Yachot, Communications Strategist, ACLU at 2:40pm 10/24/2013

If the government had its way, no one would have any idea that it regularly tracks all of our phone calls and much of our online activity.

But thanks to Edward Snowden's disclosures, we now know quite a bit more about how the NSA's surveillance programs have infiltrated our personal communications. And thanks to the outrage and mobilization of the American people, we're seeing real potential for change, both in the streets and in Congress.

This Saturday, you can join the growing movement calling on the government to get out of our private lives, at the biggest protest yet against NSA spying. Organized by the StopWatching.Us coalition – a group of 100 organizations, companies, and public figures – the rally has received the support of celebrities, politicians, and the whistleblower responsible for the robust public debate that has come out of his disclosures. In a statement Snowden provided the ACLU, he writes:

In the last four months, we've learned a lot about our government.

We've learned that the U.S. intelligence community secretly built a system of pervasive surveillance. Today, no telephone in America makes a call without leaving a record with the NSA. Today, no internet transaction enters or leaves America without passing through the NSA's hands. Our representatives in Congress tell us this is not surveillance. They're wrong.

Now it's time for the government to learn from us. On Saturday, the ACLU, EFF, and the rest of the StopWatching.Us coalition are going to D.C. Join us in sending the message: Stop Watching Us.

The rally, which takes place on the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Patriot Act into law, will bring together diverse groups from across the political spectrum to demand surveillance law reform. Speakers include Laura Murphy, the director of the ACLU's Washington Legislative Office; former senior NSA executive and whistleblower Thomas Drake; and Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), whose bipartisan bill to reform the NSA was defeated in July by only seven votes. You can see a list of other speakers, along with the details of the rally, here. And check out the video below, produced by the EFF – featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal, John Cusack, Oliver Stone, and other familiar faces – discussing the dangers of NSA spying.

The slew of bills that have been introduced (and are about to be introduced) to reform the NSA signal that the American people are ready to rein in the surveillance state. This Saturday is your opportunity to make your voice heard. Follow @ACLU_Action and #StopWatchingUs for up-to-the-minute info, and even if you can't make it in person, you can join our photo campaign and add your name to the petition calling on the government to respect our privacy. Thousands Expected At Rally Against Mass NSA Surveillance

by Matt Sledge
10/23/2013 1:31 pm EDT

The National Security Agency's opponents are moving out of the courts and onto the streets in a demonstration against mass surveillance on Saturday.

A coalition of groups called StopWatching.Us, which includes the American Civil Liberties Union and the Libertarian Party, is planning a rally for thousands in Washington to continue pressuring Congress to respond to the revelations of NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Snowden, a former NSA employee, leaked thousands of documents about the agency's surveillance operations to journalists.

"We started with rallies where members of Congress are from, and now we're going to where they work," said Charlie Furman, a campaign manager for the online advocacy group Demand Progress who is helping organize the event. "This is something we aren't going to stop caring about."

Supporters listed on the rally website include groups like an Ohio tea party group and the Green Party. Companies Ben & Jerry's and Reddit are both sponsors. And Rep. John Conyers Jr., (D-Mich.), who teamed up with Republican Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) on a failed amendment to end one NSA surveillance program, appears in an online video released Wednesday to build support for the group.

"I think that's a very real strength, to say that people are coming together when we disagree on so many different things," said Furman.

The coalition's demands are threefold: increased transparency; an end to programs like the collection of Americans' phone records; and accountability for the programs' creators and supporters.

The documents leaked to media outlets by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden this year have brought national intelligence gathering and surveillance operations under a level of scrutiny not seen in decades. Often left out of this conversation, though, is the massive private surveillance industry that provides services to law enforcement, defense agencies and corporations in the U.S. and abroad – a sprawling constellation of companies and municipalities. "It's a circle where everyone [in these industries] is benefitting," says Eric King, lead researcher of watchdog group Privacy International. "Everyone gets more powerful, and richer."

Promotional materials for numerous private spy companies boast of how law enforcement organizations can use their products to monitor people at protests or other large crowds – including by keeping tabs on individual people's social media presence. Kenneth Lipp, a journalist who attended the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Philadelphia from October 19th to 23rd, tells Rolling Stone that monitoring Twitter and Facebook was a main theme of the week. "Social media was the buzzword," says Lipp. He says much of the discussion seemed to be aimed at designing policies that wouldn't trigger potentially limiting court cases: "They want to avoid a warrant standard."Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter | RollingStone on Facebook

On October 26, 2013, protesters from across the political spectrum gathered in Washington, D.C. to take part in the Stop Watching Us Rally, a demonstration against the National Security Agency's domestic and international surveillance programs.

Reason TV spoke with protesters - including 2012 Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson and former Congressman Dennis Kucinich - to discuss the rally, why people should worry about the erosion of privacy, and President Barack Obama's role in the growth of the surveillance state.

Produced by Joshua Swain, interviews by Todd Krainin.

About 3 minutes long.

Any idea of the crowd size? 2K? 10k? 15k?

some media outlets have reported "hundreds", others have reported "thousands", so not more than a few thousand I would say.
