Usually political debates are boring affairs.
Not the Cory Booker-Steve Lonegan debates. These have been some real slugfests. The action Wednesday night hit a new high - or low if you prefer - when Lonegan made a crack about bodies floating in the river off Newark.
But subtlety is not Lonegan's long suit. He says what's on his mind. There's a reason other politicians don't do so. They want to win elections. But that's the way Lonegan is. He just plows ahead. What would be considered a gaffe for a typical politician is just S.O.P. for Lonegan.
In most campaigns that sort of thing would be a liability. But this campaign may be different
Lonegan's hopes rest with a low turnout. Republicans always do better in such situations for the simple reason that Republican voters tend to live in the suburbs and to be more motivated to go to the polls.
Democrats tend to be concentrated in the big cities and they have to be cajoled, pestered and persuaded to vote.
Will Booker be doing all of those things? He's certainly got the budget for it. But so far in this campaign he's been acting like he already won.
