The bottom line is you DON'T want to be associated with this shutdown, if you're thinking about running for president in 2016 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2013/10/10/ted-cruz-is-growing-his-national-profile-why-thats-not-all-good-news-for-him/)

According to a new Gallup poll (http://www.gallup.com/poll/165362/americans-down-leaders-shutdown-began.aspx) released Thursday, Cruz’s name recognition has climbed substantially since the summer. More than six in 10 Americans now have an opinion of the conservative senator, compared to just 42 percent in June.

The bad news for Cruz is that the more people have gotten to know him, they less they like him. He went from having a 6-point net positive favorable rating to a 10-point net negative rating.

Notice Cruz gets media attention while Rand goes unmentioned.

Just got off the phone with a polling company (ADG). They asked questions about who to blame for the gov shutdown. And somewhere in the middle of the questions hey randomly asked about how I would rate Ted Cruz but didn't tie it to gov shutdown. No other politician was specifically asked about. I thought that strange.

Wow nearly 100% of the people that first heard about him between these two polls have an unfavorable opinion about him.

Not surprising. Conservatives already knew him and loved him, and now the Democrats know him too.

I can't see anyone who opposes the shutdown voting for a liberty candidate anyway. Unless they become educated between now and the election.

He needs the recognition for when he runs against Rand in 2016.

What percentage of the population supports the shutdown? 10%? 25%. If you are correct Rand might have very little support unless he reforms and starts acting likely Hillary :(

Cruz is not bad, but he is Rand light. Since Rand is already Ron light, I would prefer Rand to Cruz.

Is it wrong that I'm willing to let Cruz to take the blame for the shutdown? Texas should be okay to re-elect him. I just want the heat of Rand's back.

That's a scary thought, but think about it....if someone is so damned worried about the government shutting down for a few weeks, how are they going to accept a candidate who wants to downsize it altogether?

I just hope they're wrong about the % of the population that opposes the shutdown. If they're not, we have an uphill climb.

If a liberty candidate wins the nomination, about 50% of them will.

Polls show most people support cutting government. Polls show most people oppose shutting down the government. I cannot explain it. God is good and people are crazy.

Not wrong at all. It feels like Cruz is trying to steal Paul's filibuster thunder. He performs much worse against Clinton than Paul, also. Paul is rarely mentioned when the shutdown is discussed, which is fantastic for us.

Why would polls matter right now? No one even knows how things are going to end. Also pretty sure you can change your favorability, the key is getting your name out there first.

Polls. Pffft. IF I answer the phone and some pollster is on the other end, then the first thing I do is ask a question: "How much are you paying for my participation?"

I've done a few focus groups and completed written surveys for pay. These people make money out of this entertainment.

Screw it, anyway. Hell, I don't even answer the phone for anybody any more. I've had the damn thing unplugged for a week now.

Downsizing the government is a very attractive idea in abstract, and a good campaign slogan. But once you delve into the details, you'll that an actual downsizing will hurt powerful special interests, such as the seniors (old white people) - a key Republican constituency. Do you know that spending on Social Security and Medicare is projected to grow by 70% over the next 10 years?

Rand Paul is never going to campaign on gutting SS and Medicare, but the old people like the idea of downsizing the government in abstract. It makes them feel good about themselves as they collect their Social Security benefits.
