Could one or more congressman/senators change party affiliations while they hold office? Suppose a new party was started that was more centrist and there was a mass exodus to it... is that possible? Not asking probable - asking possible.

What difference would it make if they were determined to vote the right way?

I don't need, or want, people to vote a certain way because it is the opinion of their party. I want them to be morally and philosophically sound and vote according to their principles.

To answer your question, I don't know. I wouldn't see a reason why not though.

Sphinctor did it, and he was a Senator at the time.

Yes. That's how the Republican party was started, actually.

They are only labels. In each party there are socialists, big government lovers, military industrial lap dogs, bankers lapdogs, big pharma loyalists etc. There are even a few that favor freedom over central powers. If they really all voted for what the party label was originally about we would not have such an out of control bureaucracy today.

Of course. Just consider how many republicans we have that vote like democrats.

Lol! I first I was like "WTF?" then I realized you were talking about Specter.

Fla Governor Charlie Crist did it too. He was a Repub, became an independent in 2010 (while still in office) to run for senate, and is now a Democrat.
