How could this be? Spalding's friends had searched throughout San Francisco, in alleys and shelters, handing out hundreds of fliers. They wondered whether the woman, dazed by powerful medication, was wandering around somewhere.

"So we have a lot of questions as her family and friends," said David Perry, a Spalding family spokesman. "Did anyone see her leave the room? Did she leave alone? Is there videotape of Lynne leaving the hospital or wandering the halls?"

The cause of the woman’s death was being investigated by the Sheriff’s Department and police.

The stairwell where the body was discovered is accessed through an emergency exit, which automatically sets off an alarm when opened.

Omar Lola, 28, a radiology lab assistant who was working on the fourth floor Tuesday, told The San Francisco Examiner that every time an emergency exit is opened it sets off an alarm. Only sheriff’s deputies with a special key are able to turn off the alarm, he added.

Lola said he had not heard the alarm go off for about eight months, but he was off for a week recently so he might have missed it.

Lola and other staff that spoke with The San Francisco Examiner said no one at the hospital informed them that anyone had gone missing from a bed. They had all learned about the missing woman from the news.

So far, San Francisco General Hospital has been sparse with details. "I think there's a lot of questions, if that's the case, that San Francisco General will have to answer not only for the family and friends Lynne Spalding, but for the people who come here expecting safety," said David Perry, a friend of the family.

Spalding entered the hospital on September 19 for treatment of an infection. On Saturday morning, September 21, sometime between 10:15 and 10:30, she disappeared. For seventeen days, the family has been in limbo.

"We have been dismayed, disappointed, and frustrated not only by the lack of information coming out of San Francisco General, the lack of a sense of urgency," Perry said.

Just a few snips from various sources.

Seems that the hospital has confirmed it, though the medical examiners report is not available yet.

No answers yet.. only questions.

someone with a key spirited a drug induced cute girl into the stairwell, raped her, left her to die.

Autopsy should answer some questions.............maybe.

my 2 cents adjusted for inflation.

someone with a key

Security (Sheriffs deputy) are the only ones with keys,, according to a lab tech interview.
They were also the ones who searched (or failed to) the building.

Lots of questions.
But the Sheriffs office is investigating.

I doubt that the lab tech is correct about that.

Unsure myself,, But whoever had keys to turn off the alarm should be questioned..

Apparently someone turned off the alarm.
