Oath Keepers

Stewart Rhodes's Oath Keepers is an organization of veterans, active duty military, law enforcement and all others who have sworn to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic", an oath which never expires. Members on military active duty are encouraged to remain anonymous, part of what prompts the Southern Poverty Law Center to denounce the organization as "a particularly worrisome example of the Patriot revival". Worrisome is precisely what they want to be of course. Such condemnation by the SPLC goes a long way in establishing their bona fides with rational people. Somewhat similar outfits include Mike Vanderboegh's Three Percenters and Larry Bailey's Gathering of Eagles.

Oath Keepers foresee martial law in the near future and pledge to disobey any order which violates the Constitution. It's a call to stand down, not to rise up, and lists these ten specific examples:

Oath Keepers: orders we will not obey:

1. We will NOT obey orders to disarm the American people.

2. We will NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people

3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as "unlawful enemy combatants" or to subject them to military tribunal.

4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a "state of emergency" on a state.

5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.

6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to "keep the peace" or to "maintain control."

9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.

10.We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government for a redress of grievances.

Some of these situations are unlikely, others have already happened, most notably the door to door forcible confiscation of firearms from ordinary citizens by the National Guard following Hurricane Katrina. The shock of seeing the Guard dishonor itself remains fresh to this day. Betrayal in time of need is impossible to forget or forgive. For many it was the moment "our" Guard became "the" Guard. If they'll violate their oath, what won't they violate?

Since then we've seen the presence of troops at police road checks, SWAT raids and other forms of disproportional violence used even for trivial offenses, say, selling unprocessed milk; the all but complete militarization of disaster response, a general disarming of civilians and law enforcement reequipped with armored vehicles and automatic weapons. In short, we're seeing the nongovernmental populace regarded as a dangerous enemy . Those who accept them at their word and conduct themselves accordingly are on rather solid ground.

On the first of October the Oath Keepers leadership instructed its 30,000 members to, in their words, go "operational" by forming Civilization Preservation teams. These twelve to fourteen member teams are to be modeled after the Special Forces A-Teams, see the details in the linked announcement. Doubters say this is an attempt by founder Rhodes to firm up control over his creation, it's been growing at an astonishing rate since its inception in 2009, while others say Oath Keepers was a sting from the beginning and this is the throw of a wider net. As always, half of what we hear is disinformation, we just don't know which half.

There is much in this for the survivalist to think about. Armed forces assume a continuation of the state, survivalists assume its collapse. Armed forces are configured to conquer and occupy enemy territory. They emphasize pragmatism and apply strategy, are loyal to the chain of command and have a formal code of conduct. Survivalists typically rely on their "warrior class" to protect its members and its territory. Warriors emphasize personal valor, use small unit tactics and exercise the ethics and codes of those they protect. History is maddeningly ambiguous about outcomes in matchups of invader-occupiers versus defenders.

The complication for an invading force is the changing makeup of the survivalist's warrior class. No longer are they merely hunters and hikers with a liking for playing soldier, although the least among these can reliably hit a man-size target at up to 600 yards. Now they're as likely to be combat veterans and their proteges. The ordinary civilian has been changed too, by hardship and continuous war and nonstop emergencies. For one, grocery shopping is being replaced by laying in supplies and acquiring a degree of self sufficiency. Hard core survivalism is taking hold as never before. Unhappily for any adversary, Fourth Generation Warfare relies heavily on such 'assets in place'.

Warnings of catastrophe are being heard from within major financial institutions, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury itself. Should such a catastrophe occur the classic scenario of martial law with a United Nations "peacekeeper" occupation force would precipitate a spontaneous mobilization rivaling that following Pearl Harbor. Even without a marque event, the ongoing repudiation of Constitutional governance may yet trip an unseen wire. Sometimes it seems surface tension is all that's keeping things from spilling over.

Be wary. This startling move by the Oath Keepers may be what it appears to be, or it may be a secret provision of the Patriot Act. After all, no competent tyranny lets their opposition run the opposition. Should extreme conditions obtain, the survivalist is advised to recall the Biblical admonition, by their fruits shall ye know them. As always, stay away from crowds.

Am I wrong to say that something close to 99% of Oathkeepers are retired LEO's/soldiers?

I love their billboards and I love where they're putting them.
I have donated to them a couple of times and on their site you can choose general, legal or billboard fund to donate to.
I choose billboard even though the donations are probably fungible just to let them know to keep it up.
