I won't vote (not old enough to; I still fall into the "your kids" category for this issue), but I know my parents would not give it up because they paid into it, the usual thing.

I would in a heartbeat. It's a scam from start to finish. For all the people that put into it, they will most likely, never get what they put in.

Not a parent, but I would give it up for any kids I ever have.

What's old? I'm 41, I don't expect there to be anything left for me, so moot point.

Yes. If I could free my kids from it, I would give up any claim to benefits.

In all fairness, this should be a no-brainer. No one is making a great living by being on SSI benefits; they wind up having to find some other supplemental income, charity assistance, etc.. With most families, having the "children" have a higher take-home pay makes more economic sense, even apart from the fact that it's stealing to start with to tax me to pay in order to provide the current crop of benefits.

I would, but my husband would not, because as was verbalized above....he feels he paid into it.

How old must one be to take part in this poll?

My interpretation was that you should at least be old enough to think you're going to get a payout.

How old must one be to take part in this poll?

Babyboomers are born between the years 1946 and 1964.

I think you have to first participate, foreigner.

I guess I'm 25 years too young to take part in the poll.

Really a bad question.

"Poll: Would you give up SSI if your kids didn't have to participate?"

No one "has to" participate, as it is just part of the income tax, which is voluntary.

No, why?

No, why?

Just curious. So you don't pay any payroll tax?

My company deducts it against my wishes and I claim a refund.

LOLz. You aren't getting your payroll taxes back. You might be getting some income taxes back, but SS and Medicare are gone forever. There's no such thing as a refund of those.

Those who are able to draw out Social Security have received a refund of those.

Not the same dollars, of course, but they are paid back what they put in and often then some.

As to the question, I am far too young to even wishfully hope I will receive a penny from Social Security. I would opt out if given the choice.

Easy vote for me because I always expected that it would be insolvent by the time I retire anyway, and I've paid into it for about 30 years

I'm in my 40's.... I'd happily give up any claim to what I've already paid in if I never had to pay another fucking red (see what I did there :) ) nickel again.

Not going to vote. I'm 58.

I don't believe for a minute that if SSI was done away with, that they wouldn't' raise the taxes else wise, but then you would just never see any of it back. Even as it is, we would get back devalued money, money that is worth a hell of lot less than when paid in. What was one of my SSI dollars worth in 1973 when I was paying in?

So, with the way things are now, my kids and grandkids would not benefit from it if it was done away with. The government is addicted to other peoples money. And they are spending a lot more than they take in, so it just keeps increasing the debt.

I am 21 and I would forego it.

Most definitely I would give it up. Plus, my kids don't have SSNs so they won't "pay" into the system, nor get anything back out.

But here's the thing with the "I paid into it, I'd better get it back": you've been lied to. There is no money. It's been spent and what's left is a giant Ponzi scheme. You're not getting 'your' money back. You're taking it directly from a younger worker who is being forced to foot your bill. The government lied and stole from you; getting the government to steal someone else's money to pay you off is no less wrong.

Program should be called Antisocial Insecurity.

Politicians think that dependancy on SSI buys them votes. Guess what. Theyre right.

Exactly. It was always simply a tax with a misleading name. No contract, no fiduciary duty, no account with your name on it. To the extent it ever looked like a real investment plan to people, they were mistaken.

I see the names without pushing anything but "Results". I'm not mobile, btw...well, I am still somewhat mobile but not like I was when I was 40 :)

I'm a Gen Xer and this is an easy question for me. My retirement planning includes receiving $0 in SS. My hopes is that maybe, just maybe that Medicare will provide emergency assistance if needed. Most likely I figure all my post-retirement medical care will be received outside the US.
