Obama Open To Redskins Name Change (*because nothing more important is going on right now*)President Barack Obama says if he owned the Redskins, he would think about changing the team's name, which many people deem offensive to Native Americans.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says that if he owned the Washington Redskins (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/wsh/washington-redskins), he would "think about changing" the team name, wading into the controversy over a football nickname that many people deem offensive to Native Americans.

Obama, in an interview with The Associated Press, said team names like the Redskins offend "a sizable group of people." He said that while fans get attached to the nicknames, nostalgia may not be a good enough reason to keep them in place.

"I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things," he said in the interview, which was conducted Friday.

“ http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/0116/espn_g_obama04_65.jpg I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things.
” -- President Barack Obama on 'Redskins' An avid sports fan, Obama said he doesn't think Washington football fans are purposely trying to offend American Indians.

"I don't want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team and rightly so," he said.

But the president appeared to come down on the side of those who have sharply criticized the football team's name, noting that Indians "feel pretty strongly" about mascots and team names that depict negative stereotypes about their heritage.

Other professional sports teams have Indian nicknames, including football's Kansas City Chiefs (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs) and baseball's Atlanta Braves (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/atl/atlanta-braves) and Cleveland Indians (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/cle/cleveland-indians).
Numerous colleges and universities have changed names that reference Native Americans. St. John's changed its mascot from the Redmen to the Red Storm, Marquette is now the Golden Eagles instead of the Warriors and Stanford switched from the Indians to the Cardinal.

The Redskins' nickname has attracted a fresh round of controversy in recent months, with local leaders in Washington calling for a name change and some media outlets refraining from using the name. The name is the subject of a long-running legal challenge from a group of American Indians seeking to block the team from having federal trademark protection.

Congressional lawmakers have introduced a bill seeking the same goal, though it appears unlikely to pass.

Opponents of the Redskins nickname also plan to hold a protest Monday outside the NFL's fall meeting in Washington.

Team owner Dan Snyder has vowed to never abandon the name. But NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said last month that the league should pay attention to those offended by the nickname -- a subtle change in position for Goodell, who had more strongly supported the nickname in his previous statements this year.

Despite the controversy, an AP-GfK poll conducted in April showed that nationally, "Redskins" still enjoys wide support. Nearly four in five Americans don't think the team should change its name, the survey found. Only 11 percent think it should be changed, while 8 percent weren't sure and 2 percent didn't answer.

Obama said he doesn't have a direct stake in the Redskins debate since he's not a team owner. But he hinted that might be part of his post-White House plans.

"Maybe after I leave the presidency," he joked. "I think it would be a lot of fun."

He added: "I'd probably look at a basketball team before I looked at a football team. I know more about basketball than I do about football."http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9772653/president-obama-washington-redskins-legitimate-concerns

Fair enough. In the end, it's up to the NFL and team owners to decide whether or not it's worth changing the team name. They'll have to weigh nostalgia and team name/logo recognition over the amount of negative press or association they garner by keeping things as they are.

Yeah, I don't care what our murderer in chief thinks about anything. The only thing I want to see from him is to fall on his knees and repent.

you don't see john mccain and lindsey graham whining about the packers. I think The Green Bay Packers are named after the Acme Meat Packing Company, which sponsored the team in their early days. So peta or vegetarians could hate the name or maybe blue collar factory workers, although I don't know why they would.

I think chicago needs a new name for it's nfl team, it's prejudiced against ursines. New England's name is offensive to statists. Don't get me started about how offensive NY's name is to tall people.

As a 'redskin" I could care less.

And most of us hate "Native American" far worse than Indian or Redskin.

I guess you could say I have 'Red Skin'. I rather like the name.

As an aside, why no outrage at Notre Dame's mascot? Fighting Irish? Some short guy dresses up in stereotypical Irish garb and dances around like a leprechaun.

Probably , if they move the team to a better area , I could get a replacement with a real tomahawk that would not get his ass kicked by Eagles fans :) , lol , that guy looks like a douchebag.

WASHINGTON—Following an outpouring of criticism from across the country, the Washington Redskins announced Wednesday that they are officially changing the team’s name to the D.C. Redskins. “We’ve heard the concerns of many people who have been hurt or offended by the team’s previous name, and I’m happy to say we’ve now rectified the situation once and for all,” said franchise owner Dan Snyder, adding that “Washington Redskins” will be replaced with “D.C. Redskins” on all team logos, uniforms, and apparel. “It was a difficult decision—and one that, frankly, I’m a little embarrassed took me so long to make. So hopefully we can now put this issue to bed and start cheering on our D.C. Redskins.” In light of Snyder’s decision, Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan told reporters he will change the feather in Chief Wahoo’s headdress from red to a “more appropriate” shade of red.http://www.theonion.com/articles/washington-redskins-change-their-name-to-the-dc-re,34161/?utm_source=Tumblr&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_campaign=Default:1:Default
