JALALABAD, Afghanistan: At least five civilians, including three children, were killed overnight in a Nato airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Saturday.

The civilians aged between 12 and 20 were hit by a Nato airstrike while they were out hunting birds in the area of Saracha, a few kilometres from Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal told AFP.

A Nato spokesman said he was aware of the airstrike but could not confirm any casualties.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A gunman who allegedly was a contract security guard killed a member of the international coalition forces in southern Afghanistan before he was killed, NATO (http://www.latimes.com/topic/unrest-conflicts-war/defense/nato-ORGOV000049.topic) said in a statement Saturday, raising the specter of a possible “insider” attack.
An investigation was underway into the attack, the alliance said. The nationalities of the coalition member and the assailant were not released.
In a separate case, NATO said, another coalition member died Saturday in southern Afghanistan from a non-battle-related injury. The international coalition didn’t provide details.
No one took immediate responsibility for the latest shooting. But in recent years, there’s been a rise in insider attacks in which foreign troops are killed by men in Afghan police, army or related security uniforms.

In shutdown news:

Pentagon to recall most furloughed workers, Hagel says

Kevin Lamarque/Reuters - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel speaks during an April briefing on the Defense Department's FY 2014 budget at the Pentagon.

By Craig Whitlock, Updated: Saturday, October 5, 6:29 PM

The Pentagon will recall almost all of its 350,000 furloughed civilian workers in the coming days, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Saturday, in a move that could substantially ease the impact of the government shutdown on the federal workforce.
Hagel’s decision is based on a liberal interpretation of a bill passed by Congress last week and signed by President Obama that ensures uniformed members of the military will not have their paychecks delayed by the shutdown. The law, titled the Pay Our Military Act (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-signs-bill-that-allows-military-many-defense-civilians-to-be-paid-during-shutdown/2013/10/01/ac562ec2-2ad9-11e3-97a3-ff2758228523_story.html), includes broad language exempting Defense Department civilians from furlough if they provide direct support to the military.
