For years, the entertainment industry has argued that online piracy has devastated business for movies, music and gaming.

But a new policy brief from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) says that not only does piracy not hurt the creative industry but it is actually helping (http://www.scribd.com/doc/172985274/LSE-MPP-Policy-Brief-9-Copyright-and-Creation).

If I were to download pirated material - heaven forfend, I would never do such a thing -
It would be for limited reasons.

Primarily it would be because the material I would want to view is simply not available. For instance, any of Ralph Bakshi's early movies, recent works in Korean that never had a release overseas, or anything starring B-movie great Reb Brown. (More like C or D movie....)

Secondarily, it would be because the material I would want to view is prohibitively expensive. There was a time when I spent $35 for a DVD copy of The Seven Samurai. But people, come on, that movie is 59 years old. It made its revenue. Twelve years ago was a different story. Today, nobody's going to spend $35 for a movie that's so old that everyone who could claim original revenue rights on it is dead.
