The better question to ask is who is getting "paid off"? The national debt is just a figure of how much currency is circulating thru the system.

there may be a few bond holders outside of the fed reserve purchases that may want to get paid off.
If we shut down the government, left taxes- sent all money to debt, it would take 5 years to pay it off.
estimating at 4 trillion a year of revenue.

LOL. If you currently voluntarily pay income and SS taxes, you still do. If you currently don't pay income or SS taxes, you still don't. It's up to you, as it always has been. You can guess about me but I'm pretty sure most everyone here already knows how many taxes I pay.

This is actually rather easy. You see, DC's budget comes from the federal gvmt. That includes trash collection. There are alleady 7,000 people signed up on a FB group to dump theirs at Boerners place. A tad bit of organizing to re-target those disposal efforts should hit pay dirt... Well, at least used Pampers...

You might not want to brag about that on the Internet. Yes I know you have a sound legal standing to not pay federal taxes, but since when has the federal government cared about the law? They don't and their judges don't either.

Guess this is a little sarcasm, but I don't even know why this is news. I remember this used to happen all the time, every few years or so. Maybe it hasn't happened with the fed gov recently, but then I confuse that with state government. "Essential services" can probably be redefined in short order, making this all pretty meaningless. All this crap will blow over very quickly without much impact at all.

Really, all this reminds me of Y2K and all the other impending doom that is always the stuff of boring news.

I wonder how long ago only keeping the "essential" employees actually brings the government back to. The "shutdown" probably brings the federal government back to the size it was in 1992 or something. Maybe Pauly Shore will make a comeback.

Theoretically this should stop the counterfeiters for a time.

Bills not being paid should default some bad loans.

Value should start returning to the dollar.

Stock prices should drop because of the stronger dollar.

Commodity prices should drop because of the stronger dollar.

Instead of our investments going up at the same pace as inflation and then getting stiffed for capital gains taxes on the illusion of a profit, maybe we will be able to get some tax money back on the illusion of a loss.

Anyway its only a theory. In practice they'll be back in time to see that their economy prospers even more as they pretend to save the world.

Our world and our economy will continue to be subject to all the regular taxation PLUS their stealth, back-door taxation without representation created by the counterfeiting overlords.

I would think it a representation of what we as a nation are responsible for paying back.

I'm thinking lots of the false front banks belly up to those loan windows and have promised to pay back to the tune of considerable more than the national debt. In fact the central banks themselves, outside of our once great nation, where bailing out banks and countries globally. I'm figuring that is figuring into our inflation problem as we speak.

THe Dem from NJ went at it:

The last thing the American public needs is a economic body slam from Uncle Sam.

Would that be the fear from the 50% of the public that are receiving handouts for survival or who have gvmt jobs, that the handouts will stop? They won't but the dems have tried to scare them into thinking they might.

Or would that be the very real effects of someone being put on half time, their budget getting very tight and having to buy health care at a rate more than you can afford at half wages and barely keeping a roof over your head?

result: get fined for money you don't have. But hay, the gvmt would love to lock you up and feed you 3 squares a day until you pay off the taxes. Oh, and you get free health care too! This will only cost the state more than you owe per week to keep you incarcerated.

Polls are meaningless of course, even when polling the exact same thing the results depend entirely on the wording. One thing that's all-but-certain is the MSM will push the ones that favor the Dems.

Three weeks a couple times, some a half day, those first few years though , they kept the debt down ( compared to the past few years).....
