View Full Version : Dallas County Now Has Its Very Own Bulletproof, "Mine-Protected" Military SUV

Now that the war in Iraq is officially over and the one in Afghanistan winding down, the Department of Defense found itself facing a conundrum. It had just spent billions of dollars buying heavily armored personnel carriers designed to stand up to insurgent attacks only to find that it had run out of wars to use them in.

The initial plan was to shove the vehicles, called MRAPS (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) into a warehouse and let them collect dust. That changed when someone decided that, having served so admirably overseas, it would be only just to bring the MRAPs stateside and deploy them in the domestic war on crime.

And so, for the past couple of months, news reports have been popping up announcing that places like Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Ohio State University have been receiving their very own military-grade armored SUVs.
...
OK. Pretty cool. But let's back up for a moment. There's a very glaring, very fundamental question we haven't yet addressed: Why in holy hell does Dallas County need an armored military vehicle built to withstand a minor apocalypse?

The underlying reason seems to be that military trucks are fucking cool, but no one's actually saying that. The sheriff's office is touting it as a tool that will help them better serve warrants.

"Having a tactical vehicle will not only provide warrants execution with the equipment to assist in performing their jobs but will provide an overall safety arch," Chief Deputy Marlin Suell wrote to commissioners.

Because there's no telling when North Texas might descend into sectarian warfare and start planting IEDs along Riverfront Boulevard.

I'd like to see the silver lining.
If these tanks/apc's were on a military base. They'd be hard for a patriot to get their hands on when the time comes.
But if the tank is parked at your local pd parking lot, well- it will be a lot easier to gain that asset when the time comes.

Ya know I just realized these are not as big a deal for police departments to have as I had initially thought. The maintenance schedule on these things is insane. Something is always broken, some things are just more broken than others. Somehow I doubt every town getting these has trained crews to do the upkeep. Most of these are pretty much gonna become parade pieces only as budget cuts keep them from being kept in functional order.

They should have put them in the warehouse. I doubt they would find much time to collect dust, the government is always finding another country it must invade.

Now they will have to bother the MIC to build more of those things when they decide to invade the next country.

Yes but those vehicles are so 2013,what the army needs is the next generation weapons that will help them do their job while increasing their safety. :toady: .And now that they have found new owners for those armor plated trucks ( because that is what they are ) they can just buy new ones.

Don't you support the troops?

Isn't that deal with most Military Industrial Complex contractors? Make a profit selling a lemon, them make even more of a profit, fixing that same lemon. Many Defense manufacturers design this crap to break for the profitable sustaining contracts or break to buy the new and so-called improved next year models.

Well at least that's what the warranty states... which includes campaign donations and Washington DC Dinner-Party fundraisers.

a Pellet gun can take out he hydraulic/transmission cooler (however that could be the AC condenser on the driver side). Everyone (MRAP) that I've seen have some type of obvious vulnerability. Just look closely and you'll find it.

Probably the easiest way to disable it is via induced roll over. The military does extensive "MRAP rollover training". I suspect local LEO's would call professional tow truck operator and be SOL until.

I'm thinking World War Two was the last pretty much equally matched war for us.

I heard Mussolini was able to crush third world nations during it the way we've been doing gallivanting around since then. Perhaps part of the plan of driving the globe under economically is to give the dictators the third world advantage over everyone.
