Please allow me to update you on some of this week's happenings in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Rand Paul Joins Fellow Republicans In Fight to Defund Obamacare
This week, in an effort led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), some of my Republican colleagues and I took to the Senate Floor with the intent of making D.C. listen. With the threat of a government shutdown looming, Congress is faced with two options: shut down the government or work together to amend the Continuing Resolution and Obamacare in order to keep the government open. I am opposed to Obamacare and I will not vote for a Continuing Resolution that funds this bad bill as is.
Starting Oct. 1, Americans, whether they want it or not, will be compelled to purchase a government mandated product - health insurance - or pay a tax. Meanwhile, the same elected officials who implemented this mandate have the option of exempting themselves from it. That is to say, these officials are forcing you to partake in something that they themselves are refusing.
All week, I have been asking, "If Obamacare is so great, why then are federal employees and elected officials getting special treatment and opting out?"
Earlier this week, I joined Sen. Ted Cruz on the Senate Floor to discuss this issue at length.

The next morning, I joined Sen. Cruz again to explain how this partisan legislation will ruin our country's healthcare system.

I also joined Sen. Mitch McConnell for a colloquy on the Senate Floor to discuss how Obamacare will negatively impact Kentucky.

On Friday afternoon, the Senate proceeded to vote on a Continuing Resolution that included the funding of Obamacare. I voted against this resolution, however the vote passed the Senate 54-44.

Dr. Rand Paul Participates in Bipartisan Surveillance Reform Legislation
On Wednesday, I joined Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) to discuss reforming domestic surveillance laws and the secret surveillance court. I support reforms on the way to a full restoration of our Founders' idea embodied in the Fourth Amendment.

Dr. Rand Paul Responds to Kentucky Attorney General's Letter on Industrial Hemp
On Wednesday, I responded to Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway's advisory letter on industrial hemp and continued to support Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer's efforts on this issue.
Kentucky law provides for the production of industrial hemp in the Commonwealth and we are ready to move forward. The Obama Administration has weighed in on laws in other states and I would expect for Kentucky to be treated equally in this process. I support Agriculture Commissioner James Comer's efforts and I will continue to do all I can to secure this new industry for Kentucky.

Dr. Rand Paul Joins Kentucky Delegation to Fight Against the War on Coal
On Thursday, I joined Sen. Mitch McConnell and Reps. Ed Whitfield, Brett Guthrie, Thomas Massie, Andy Barr and Hal Rodgers at a press conference to discuss the economic ramifications of the Environmental Protection Agency's greenhouse gas standards for new power plants.

Regulations like these are just another example of "regulation by ambush" on multiple fronts. Whether it is retro active denial of permits, over-the-top environmental requirements or the onerous regulations on coal-fired power plants, the policies of this administration are threatening the very way of life in Kentucky.
As President Obama attempts ‎to kill coal jobs, I will organize resistance through the Congressional Review Act, introduce legislation to clarify and repeal regulations, and utilize the procedural opportunities available to me in the Senate. I will continue to stand up for Kentucky's coal industry and for the jobs and livelihoods it provides.

Dr. Rand Paul Meets with American Farm Bureau Federation
This week, I met with Adam Hinton, the Kentucky delegate from the American Farm Bureau Federation. We discussed the Farm Bill and other pieces of legislation that directly affect the agriculture community.

Dr. Rand Paul Meets with the Conservative 50 Plus Alliance
This week, I met with representatives from the Conservative 50 Plus Alliance, a grassroots organization obtaining petitions from Americans that wish to delay, dismantle and defund Obamacare. The Conservative 50 Plus Alliance has received over 68,000 signed petitions.

The American people do not approve of the Obamacare mandate and the best way to let you representatives know how you feel is by signing petitions, making calls and attending town hall meetings.

Dr. Rand Paul Speaks with the Concerned Women for America
Also this week, I had the opportunity to speak with the Concerned Women for America at their annual Lobby Day. We discussed some of their concerns, such as the looming debt crisis and the implementation of Obamacare.
