View Full Version : Melt the phones!

“Melt the phones!”
That’s the new battle cry for friends of medical freedom and foes of Obamacare.

The time is now to phone Republican senators and urge them to vote “No” on Majority Leader Harry Reid’s cloture motion, which will come up for a vote on Wednesday. Reid hopes to secure 60 votes to stop debate on the House-passed continuing resolution that funds the federal government and keeps it open beyond the end of this fiscal year (Monday, September 30). The House’s CR finances everything in the federal budget, save for Obamacare, which it mercifully zeroes out just before it wheezes into its next phase: Tuesday’s opening of the so-called health-care exchanges. (Most of these government-run websites for selecting government-designed insurance are rickety, at best. A recently discovered software glitch will make it tough, if not impossible, to determine what price to charge people who sign up for new Obama plans.)

“The only way we can stop Harry Reid is if the entire Republican caucus in the Senate unites and stands with the American people and the House of Representatives,” explains Amy Kremer of the Tea Party Express.

“In order for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to offer an amendment that strikes defund language from the FY14 CR, which has been his publicly stated desire, he must first get bipartisan support on the cloture vote to end debate,” observes Andy Roth, vice president of government affairs for the Club for Growth (several of whose gatherings I have addressed). “If he is successful, he will only need 50 votes to keep Obamacare funding in the budget,” adds Roth, “and thus grow government and further erode economic liberty.”

Defeatist Republicans such as Karl Rove, whose massive 2012 campaign spending was only 1.3 percent effective, are rooting against courageous senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio who are trying to defund Obamacare right now. A sad caucus of RINOs, moderates, and invertebrates wants to postpone this fight and oppose Obamacare . . . maybe . . . later. Their slogan? Tomorrow is another day, so perhaps we could stop Obamacare then.

The best argument for this approach is that once implemented, Obamacare will implode and the GOP can ride to the rescue. Well, even then, as they do now, Republicans will face Reid and Obama. They will fall on their scalpels before letting their dream legislation die.

So, why not try to kill it now, and at every possible turn?

Even if Obamacare rolls out after January 1, Republicans will be in a much stronger position to oppose it in 2014 if they can remind Americans that they repeatedly tried to prevent this catastrophe.

“We told you so,” they can tell voters. “We tried everything we could to stop this calamity – from initially voting against it unanimously, to voting in the House to repeal it, to attempting to defund it in September 2013. Now that we all see what a calamity this is, let’s try again to repeal it. If that fails, elect a Republican Congress, and we will do what we can to pry this giant leech from the backs of the American people.”

For now, Republican senators need to hear their phones ring. Urge them to vote “No” on cloture on Wednesday. Tea Party Express offers contact information for GOP senators. “The list below is in the order of priority of who needs to be contacted,” the limited-government group notes. “Please start at the top and work your way down. Just because they don’t represent your state, does not mean their vote doesn’t affect you.”

The late, great Senator Everett Dirksen (R., Ill.) once famously said, “When I feel the heat, I see the light.” May wavering Republican senators soon feel the heat as freedom-loving Americans melt the phones!

What's the strategy if cloture fails? If cloture fails and Senate does nothing, Cruz will have effectively prevented the Senate from debating a bill the GOP wants to pass.

Yeah, what's going on, everyone (even Cruz and Paul) are voting "aye" on this vote today?

What's happening is either there has been no clear strategy from the beginning or they reached some miracle agreement with the RINOs or with Reid.

What's the lie?

The lie is no lie in it's step by step form, it's a lie in obfuscation and denial.

IF the GOP votes for Cloture, it will give Senator Reid what he wants which is for the "Defund ObamaCare" portion of the House Bill to be removed. And they know it but act like they don't.

Reid has already put forth the amendment to remove the "Defund ObamaCare" language from the bill, and if Cloture is passed then it only takes 51 democratic votes (which they have) to pass the amendment and they know it.

The GOP has enough votes (41) to stop Cloture!
