Ex-FBI agent pleads guilty in national security leak

The accused was an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 25 years
An ex-FBI agent has agreed to plead guilty to leaking information to a reporter about an al-Qaeda bomb plot and to child pornography charges.

Stored secrets In 2008, he was rehired as a contractor, maintaining his security clearance and continuing to have access to classified defence information, according to court documents.
On 2 May 2012, he disclosed secret information to a reporter, according to a court document he signed.

Nine days later he was arrested on separate charges of trading images of child pornography online, having been identified during an investigation into another man accused of possession of child pornography.
An FBI search of Sachtleben's computer, seized in the child pornography investigation, revealed improperly stored secret documents, according to court records.

On Monday, Sachtleben pleaded guilty to unauthorised disclosure of national defence information, unauthorised possession and retention of national defence information, and two charges of distributing and possessing child pornography.
The plea agreement calls for him to be sentenced to a total of 140 months in prison - 43 for the national security offenses and 97 for the child pornography charges.

That's a plea agreement? What kind of time was he looking at otherwise? The article doesn't say.

He's 55, so he gets out when he's 67 and normal male life expectancy in this country is something like 78. That and he's going to be a Fed in prison. That's going to make him about as popular as an undercover cop in prison...

It boggles my mind that he's getting a lot less time for an action "that endangered American lives" than for possessing some pictures. And hasn't the Pentagon routinely looked the other way when their employee's got caught with underage pics?

Oh yeah, and they are going to put an expert on making explosives and bombs into Criminal U. Now THAT is going to make the country a whole lot safer!

Sachtleben worked for the FBI as a bomb technician from 1983-2008 and held top secret security clearance.

Not to mention that the gvmt seizing the AP phone records was unconstitutional and ILLEGAL!

They don't put convicted cops in with the regular people.

What's the likelihood that he was framed for the child porn?

It makes one wonder. Either there are a lot of pedo's in the government or that is their favorite tactic to use to get someone. The child porn meme seems to pop up when a fed goes down.

There are a lot of ex-gov agents in federal pen.

High! kiddy porn, the drop gun of the digital age.

I've noticed a trend in breaking stories where "and we found kiddy porn" is usually part of the narrative and never mentioned again.

In general population or protective custody?

The name "Chelsie" Manning comes to mind...

Protected witnesses live a more comfortable life than other prisoners, which includes having free and unlimited access to telephone and cable television and the ability to use their own money to buy food, appliances, jewelry, and other items.

In a prison context, protective custody is used mainly in the following cases:

Those who are at high risk of being harmed or killed by other prisoners either for their crime or their group (ethnic or otherwise), such as pedophiles, child murderers / child abusers,[4] corrupt police officers, gang members in a prison containing rival gang members or those who choose to "debrief" (provide information on their gang), or prisoners who are gay, transsexual, or transgender.[5]

Makes me wonder if he decided to live as a woman based on his lawyers advice?

Actually there are flamers in general population, and they don't get harassed. Harassment is reserved for informants, cops, sex offenders, and people who disregard the rights of others inside prison (stealing, starting fights, or failing to pay debts). Informants, cops, and sex offenders go straight to protective custody.

If anyone wants to go to protective custody, all he has to do is ask the staff, no sex-change required. If Manning goes to general population, the prisoners will treat him decently; if anything they'll treat him well. Half the people in there are non-violent drug-sellers. Of the people convicted of (federal) violence, most are bank-robbers, mafia, and drug-sellers who behave civilly inside prison. And then there's the 15-20% who are just plain innocent and got wrongfully convicted. The assholes are outnumbered and kept in check by the rest.

We are talking about a military prison here. You seem to be talking about a civilian prison population.
