Police said officers saw a man on foot weaving erratically through traffic and sometimes blocking vehicles. After approaching him, police said, the man reached into his pocket as if grabbing a weapon, and two officers fired a total of three shots. They missed him but struck a 54-year-old woman in the right knee and grazed a 35-year-old woman in the buttocks, police said.

The women were taken to hospitals, where they both were listed in stable condition, according to police. Neither had injuries considered life threatening, police said.

The man was taken into custody after a police sergeant subdued him with a Taser. No weapons were found on him.

The incident began when officers saw a man on foot weaving erratically through traffic and sometimes blocking vehicles.

"One officer saw him out in the middle of the street, he obviously was causing a disturbance," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "Cars were trying to avoid him...it appeared that he wanted to be struck by the cars."

After approaching him, police said, the 35-year-old man reached into his pocket and took his hand out, simulating that he was shooting at the officers.

The two officers fired a total of three shots, missing the man and hitting the two women.

A sergeant who arrived on the scene used a Taser to subdue the man. He was taken into custody and is also at Bellevue Hospital.

I was at 74th street in a bar when this happened. The local news made it sound much different. Granted they probably didn't know what was going on either.

And to think, it is illegal for you or I to possess a handgun in NYC, while this street gang runs amok with blessings from the state.

Women? What women? What are you talking about? Oh, wait! You must be referring to those two mundanes who got shot.

I forgot all about them in my distress over whether those poor, brave police officers were safe and unharmed ...

That ^^ ...I wish these stupid pigs would form circular firing squads...they'd miss their intended target and kill each other every time. :P

Anyways, get some rope!

People see a guy open carrying and get all scared, but seeing a bunch of cops acting stupid with guns and they stand there happy to look.

I don't have time to read the whole story but what I really want to know is if the two brave officers made it home OK and safe? Also, let's hope they gets some time off and therapy brought on by the stress of having to shoot some mundanes in order to corral a dangerous unarmed offender.
