DENVER – Denver police are defending their decision to stand down while dozens of people lit up marijuana cigarettes at a free pot giveaway in Civic Center park.
Deputy Chief David Quinones tells the Denver Post the department didn't want to incite a riot Monday over a petty offense.
Hundreds of people lined up to get free pot during an event organized by opponents of a statewide ballot question over taxing retail marijuana sales.
The measure on the November ballot asks Colorado voters to approve a 15 percent excise tax plus a 10 percent statewide sales tax on all retail marijuana purchases.

it's comforting how it takes a riot for them to use common sense.

Wait... So the cops didn't go in and act like the thugs they normally do, because they were..afraid of inciting violence from their intended victims? Telling...

Its almost like a red line was drawn, and they found a reason supporting a backout.

Its what happens when government's mouth writes checks that its body cant cash.

25% tax...
I think the point of this giveaway was to show these busybody bureaucrats that you can't tax it.

What they'll try to do is make it illegal for private citizens to grow. Like distilling your own liquor. Can't have the government not get their cut.

25% tax...

I could be wrong but it's my understanding that "medical" weed isn't subject to the tax, and since it's so easy to get the card, most people are just going to avoid paying it that way (to the hilarious consternation of local officials).

Yep, it's really time they just give up and lettuce grow the stuff.

I have this fear. I will only state it once in here. I believe organized crime like the Mafia will or has already, have their fingers in the pie on the legal marijuana industry in Washington State.

That is all.

A 25% tax will likely give the cartels a way to sell a cheaper product.

Yeah... I don't go defending cops much, but maybe many of them really didn't want to intervene.
