More evidence that American travel is headed for a two-tier security theater that is reasonable and light for rich people and business travellers, and increasingly awful and invasive for everyone else: as Pre-Check expands, people who fly often enough to make it worth spending $85 will be able to keep shoes, jackets and belts on and avoid pornoscanners (including the new more radioactive versions). Us dirty foreigners, as well as people who save carefully for one trip every couple of years to see their families, will get the ever-expanding Grand Guignol treatment, especially since everyone with any clout or pull will be over there in Pre-Check land, getting smiles and high-fives from the TSA.

(including the new more radioactive versions (http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/25/showdown-at-the-airport-body-scanner/))

WTF! I don't know why I'm surprised they pulled a fast one. All the more business for the two-tier medical industrial complex.

The Rapiscan machines have recently been replaced with scanners made by another company, which produce less graphic images. They also employ millimeter waves, which produce a significantly lower amount of radiation than X-rays. But those lower doses may be temporary. In October the T.S.A. signed a contract, potentially worth $245 million, with a third company that supplies a variety of “X-ray detection solutions.” It shouldn’t be too long before their machines begin appearing in airports.

The article almost makes it sound like the pre-check is a desirable thing, for privileged business people, but that $85 is meant to cover the cost of background checks, finger printing, etc.... so you are paying for the government to do a background check on you and to put your prints in a database, in exchange for not having to take your belt, shoes off.

I wonder, how long until politicians start campaigning on helping the poor and disadvantaged get access to pre-checks. Because we are an enlightened western egalitarian society, equal rights for all, don't you know, we can't have two classes of travelers, with one class not getting their finger printing and background checks.

Nidal Hasan had his fingerprints and his background checked as well. I feel so much safer now.

I suggest abolishing the TSA instead, and locking everyone who votes to keep them in existance in a cage.

(I'm being rhetorical here, as I don't actually support prison as a form of punishment.

Heck, the rich pay most of the taxes, shouldn't they get treated a little better for doing so?

That's no excuse to violate the rights of the poor.

Also, not all rich are rich for the same reasons. Bankers in particular don't deserve what they have.

And what they hve done to common Americans who can't afford private jets.. will they be held accountable for that.

More and more have started to connect the dots.
