The Ron Paul Survival Kit is the obvious answer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/58372028@N00/6560359999/
"When the new money is imposed, every American family must have a Survival Kit of highly liquid, small-denomination silver and gold coints for hand-to-hand use in an emergency.
The Ron Paul Survival Kit - now an industry standard - comes in an official World War II U.S. Army Ammo-Holder. Warning: do not keep this ina bank, but only where you can get to it during a bank holiday."

Unfortunately, my money is in an IRA, so taking it all out would mean a really large donation for Uncle. :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-2eJQqXm7sInteresting Danke. I don't trust the big private banks, but I don't think a big public bank is a good solution either. I guess that is directed more towards municipalities anyway. Seems very Bill Stillish.

Not if you seek asylum in Russia like Snowden did.

If I drain it at a low level, the tax rate is lower (If I don't make too much otherwise). (And, after I turn 59 1/2 there won't be a 10% penalty, I'm 58 1/2 now).

You will pay tax on it anyway once your retirement comes. Just at a lower rate - the question is; is saving the spread worth the risk of keeping it tied up at this point in history?
