Here we go again:

The F.B.I. has increased its surveillance of Syrians inside the United States in response to concerns that a military strike against the government of President Bashar al-Assad could lead to terrorist attacks here or against American allies and interests abroad, according to current and former senior United States officials.

In the name of protecting Syrians from their own government, our government is ratcheting up its domestic surveillance program.
What a perfect illustration of how DC's policies help no one but DC insiders. The American people have no stake in the Syrian civil war, and oppose intervening by wide margins. But perpetual war not only enriches the well-connected war industry, it also boosts the power of government.
So who's going to protect us from OUR government?

Suddenly Syrians "hate our freedoms", why?

On a side note, Apple's guru Steve Jobs was of Syrian Arab blood by heritage, son of Syrian muslim Abdul Fattah Jandali.

His looks somehow reminded of this recent Rolling Stone cover of foreign heritage American whom apparently agencies were watching:

They are off base. That would assume you have pro-Assad Syrians in the US. Likely that is not the case, most would be against the regime if they left their country. It wouldn't be Syrians doing the terrorism anyway, they contract that out to Hezbollah.

None of that matters, we must be protected.

The Syrians I have met recently are all pro-Regime with the male family members still in Syria fighting against the rebels. These families appear to have the resources to escape the bloodshed in their home country and have all had long ties to immigrant families in the United States. The woman I met talked about the love and support they have for the Palestinians. While having deep Islamic roots, it is clear that Syria is a secular regime and the thoughts and attitude of the Syrian woman I am speaking with reflect that.

I believe Syrians in America pose no threat of retaliation as a group for many reasons. For starters, I think is wrong to simply look at someone's heritage and cast stereotypes upon them based on perceived group actions. More than anything, I believe that even if this woman's brother were to be killed because of American intervention, she would not hold the people of the United States responsible. She told me explicitly that she just wished her brother would give up fighting and come to America to live a peaceful life.

I was somewhat confused by these comments, but it helps to understand that for as bad as the US government is from my perspective, folks from places Syria view the US government as largely hands off and even pliable to the will of the people. It's an interesting dynamic that should be nourished. Unfortunately, I do feel that the one thing that would quickly turn this woman and her family here in America on a dime is if the Federal government instigated some sort of crack down or other oppressive behavior targeting folks with Syrian roots. That coupled with military intervention that would kill her family would destroy her as a human being and at that point, who knows what she would be capable of.
