Property taxes are unAmerican and backward. I think sales taxes are more legitimate.

Yeah, and his big success story he hung his hat on in his first year was that he got a CAP on the rate of INCREASE of property taxes to be no more than 2% a year. At the time they made a big deal about it. big whoop, a cap on the rate of INCREASE is still INCREASE in a state with some of the highest rates in the nation.

I have family in NJ and it boggles my mind the property taxes they pay--$6,000 a year. I have family in NY (on the Island) that pay over $10,000 a year. Un-freakin'-believable! That is theft any way you slice it.

And even with supposedly the majority of that money going to the schools, the teachers pension fund for the state is underfunded by an estimated well over $30 billion!

Sounds like the money is being diverted somewhere. LOL

Sounds like the money is being diverted somewhere. LOLGovernment Unions( the Irony  ) overpaid government salaries, over compensated government OT, over-staffed government positions, over-promised government benefits/pensions, over-spending by government, overall massive debt. Anyone in their right mind would get out of these socialist tax-holes.

How in the hell is that racist? Someone shouldn't be punished for making improvements to their property, which is exactly what a property tax does. Not only that, but it ensures that you really never actually own your property, you just rent it from the state. I really hope that was sarcasm.

California is well over $10,000 in most cases.

Due to Prop 7, California property taxes are limited on how much they can be raised in a year. Unlike many states, the tax is based on what you bought the property for vs what your neighbor might have paid for theirs (rising home values in your area won't raise your taxes). I do like this feature of CA property taxes (as much as one can like them anyways!)

As of 2007, California had the third lowest property tax rate of any state. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/10/business/11leonhardt-avgproptaxrates.html?_r=0 which was half the national average.
