Schools put genius child in special ed, tell mom he can’t learn. Now he’s free, and he’s on track to win a Nobel Prize

They said he would never learn, now he’ll teach them a thing or two…

A genius boy whose IQ is higher than Albert Einstein is on his way to possibly winning a Nobel Prize after being set free of special education programs in public schools. His mother made the decision to take him out of the programs, even after having doctors diagnose him with ADD and say that her son Jacob Barnett would never even learn to tie his shoes. She describes in her book “The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing Genius” that she was afraid of trying to pull him out of school. “For a parent, it’s terrifying to fly against the advice of the professionals. But I knew in my heart that if Jake stayed in special ed, he would slip away.”

Jacob was not thriving in special ed classes. He kept turning deeper into himself and was uncommunicative with other people. His doctors diagnosed ADD and prescribed medical treatment for the boy. When he wasn’t in therapy though, his mother noticed him doing amazing things. “He would create maps all over our floor using Q-tips. They would be maps of places we’ve visited and he would memorize every street.”

Jake dropped out of elementary school in the 5th grade. His incredible memory allowed him to attend university classes after he learned all of high school math in two weeks. Now he’s on track to graduate from college at age 14 and working on theories to build on Einstein’s theory of relativity.

To be out of conformance to the normal is naturally seen as being stupid by those that aren't that bright themselves.

My brother's a flippin' genius.

When he was little my mother noticed that when she was teaching him to read that he wasn't "reading" but had a perfect oral memory and was simply repeating back what she was saying.

She made a decision to homeschool him and then discovered that the way he learned was dramatically different than the way things were taught in public school. He learns like a vacuum and once ready for a subject he "sucks it up" in days- sometimes hours- and has it down.

He didn't learn to read until he was 11; he asked my mother for a certain book, she bought it and handed it to him. When he finished the book, he never stopped and now has a library of 1000's of books and reads everything from classical literature to scientific manuals.

If he had gone to school he would have been put in remedial classes and considered a dunce. I doubt if he'd even be alive today, if he had gone that route.

Goes to show this top down one level approach is not effective for everyone. The kid might fail the standardized tests but is writing physics theory beyond what the professors can understand.

Judge Napolitano posted this and it made my day. Glad he made it out of the public indoctrination/memorization centers. Same for your brother.

The special ed should be closed.

In Canada as well normal kids are being into the special ed for no good reason other then the claims of (lacked learning) the special ed also puts refuges kids in if you dont there style of education.

I wonder just how smart the lady that is studying autism is. Is she really capable of understanding what she is approaching? Perhaps an autistic/asperger child will fill the role.

Ok, am I the only one who constantly rolls his eyes when Einstein is used as the measuring stick for 'genius'? The guy was good at math and physics; everything else was more or less a trainwreck. Compare him to someone like Tesla, and it's really no contest. I'm guessing Einstein's fame is mostly thanks to his divulging the secrets of nuclear fission, thus putting America on the fastrack to world domination. Serve the State, become great!

This kid speaking and trying to explain the fourth dimension reminded me of Tesla.

No doubt if he doesn't get sidetracked in other things he will be one of the greatest thinkers the world has ever seen. IMO, anyways.

The "Einstein" in my title was because I ran out of space and tried to stay with the article's title and body. Not to down Einstein as he was incredibly gifted and said/did some profound things.

You're probably quite right. If I recall correctly, Einstein was told the same thing when he was young. They said he was too stupid to learn and thought he had autism. I guess that's not just a hallmark of the modern American education/mental health systems.

In fact, geniuses throughout time have been misunderstood. The hallmark of the genius is to be misunderstood, something I have had problems with a lot, thusly and theretoforwithall making me a genius.

Ok, the last sentence was a joke except for the first fragment of the sentence, which is that the hallmark of the genius is to be misunderstood. That is true.

Also, I thought I remembered hearing about an extremely similar case of child prodigy about ten years ago. Is this story old, or was that a completely different person? I heard he wanted to fly around the world in a hot air balloon. Does anyone know who I'm talking about, because this is really bugging me?

If he overthrows any physics principal, then I will smash my penis with hammer. Just because you're good at memorizing does not mean that you are good at seeing things that others cannot. Einstein wasn't a genius because a could memorize numbers or graduate collage by the age of 14. He was genius, because of what I mentioned earlier.

Einstein is very overrated, but he was not autistic. The guy married his cousin and abused her for years on end. As well as try to discredit new ideas because he kknew it would discredit his. He was a known womanizer (as an autistic i am jealous because i can't get girls) and was a morally abhorrent man. Why not Stephen Hawking? He's a genius from the start and overcame bigger challenges than autism (that is not to say neurological or mental illness is not a challenge. Schizophrenics live a life of hell.) What about Robert Higgs? What about Eric Kandel? (NYU screwed him so he went to columbia) (my psychiatrist, who later became the head of the department, thought his model of memory cannot stand. Yet Kandel Proved them wrong) What about Solomon Snyder who pioneered pharmacology? (he never won the Nobel but got a department named after him)What about Dorothy Hodgekin for her work with X Ray's and Biochemistry?
Intelligence has no predictable model, that's like GDP growth is a good parameter of wealth. Some are Nerds, some were disabled. Most intelligent people have intelligent parents, and it is hereditary, there is no way to increase it. Quite simply, the Nobel Laureates were born that way. As for this child, i doubt he'll win. He's like most child prodigies, they either burn out or get cocky and win something less than expected. While he is an excellent specimen of the human race, he is a rarity.
Sadly, Intelligence will become the new gold of the next era, the smart will dominate the world. It is truly unfair, to see that a true genius like Mises was snubbed, so that they could give it to Hayek (while excellent, he is socialism-lite.)

Back in my day, there was another program: "Get Ahead" Program. Or something like that. Today, we have programs like "No Child Left Behind". Yeah, someones losing ground here.

(paraphrasing George Carlin, too lazy to go look for the quote on Youtube)

And schools are eliminating the reading groups and math groups in the grades as well. No more are kids that are advanced at the grade level separated into groups apart from kids that are average or lower. They are all forced onto the same curriculum at the same pace. I would be disappointed (and even more bored) if I was a kid; I always took pride in being in the advanced groups.

I was told that my son was working up to his potential even though he couldn't read at the end of third grade. I was pretty sure that he was dyslexic but they said they didn't test for that. I read everything I could find on dyslexia and took him out of school to home school. Not long after starting to home school he was reading fairly well. I gave him an IQ test I found at the library and he scored well above average. I believe if I had left him in public school that he would have ended up in a special education class.

Schools have no clue what constitutes genius. That said IQ is a terrible measure as well.
