Assad using chemical weapons now as UN inspectors were there and when he clearly had the upper hand makes absolutely no sense.

If the reigns of power or your approaching death was on the line, I could imagine quite a few generals who'd have no qualms about gassing civilians. When Assad is out of power, they'll take command. And the freedom French fry eating 'Mericans can wave flags proudly about the new "democracy" we helped create. For a while at least.
