Army Major Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death Wednesday for killing 13 people and wounding over 30 in a 2009 shooting spree in Fort Hood, Texas.

The military panel deliberated for nearly three hours before handing down the sentence.

Hasan, who acted as his own lawyer, gave no closing argument and presented no evidence or witnesses during the trial’s penalty phase, continuing a defensive strategy that seemed designed to ensure he received the harshest penalty. In the early portion of the trial, he told the jury that the evidence would clearly show he was the shooter and repeatedly referred to himself as a member of the Mujahadeen. He also refused yesterday to allow his standby counsel to present evidence that could have helped him, such as his good behavior during pre-trial confinement.

During closing arguments, lead prosecutor Michael Mulligan asked the jury to “make [Hasan] accountable,” and told the court that he would be no martyr if given the death penalty.

“Do not be fooled. He is not giving his life, we are taking his life. This is not his gift to god, this is his debt to society,” Mulligan said before calling Hasan “a criminal” and a “cold-blooded murderer.”

Why is this in Rand Paul's forum?

One US soldier(non-semite) confessed to premeditated murder of 16 people, mostly children and women, and then burning their bodies gets life in prison.
Another US soldier(semite) confessed to murder of 13 military adults and gets death penalty.

Does anyone know how same military justice system gave such very different verdicts for two confessed murderers?

A US soldier charged with murdering 16 Afghans, including several women and children, after slipping away from his base is to plead guilty in order to avoid execution.
Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales will plead guilty to charges of premeditated murder on June 5 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he has been awaiting court martial, according to lawyer John Henry Browne.
The plea deal must be approved by the judge in the case and the commanding general.
A sentencing-phase trial will then determine whether Bales is jailed for life with or without the possibility of parole.
As part of the deal Bales will give an account of what happened on the night of the March 11, 2012 after he left the remote Camp Belambay outpost in southern Afghanistan.
Prosecutors say he killed 16 people, including 11 members of the same family, on a rampage through two separate villages. Some of the bodies were piled up and burned in the mud-walled compounds.

Good, he deserves it.

Can't argue with you there but I have issue with murder being illegal except for when the government does it.

Hassan or Bales? Or both?

What a dumbass. What did Hasan think this would accomplish?

I am very reluctant to agree with the death penalty, but I think this situation calls for it. Just put a gun to the back of his head and put him down.

It would've been better if that defense security contractor was a better shot ;) Then we wouldn't have all of this.

It would have been better if the military had not disarmed it's own troops, creating a defenseless, target rich environment. No need for defense security contractors to keep an armed watch over soldiers. Or maybe the gvmt doesn't trust it's own troops...

Ya, for sure. I was an SP(MP), and there were many deployed when that event occurred; however, the only one at the situation was the contractor. They started to employ DOD police instead of SP/MPs due in part from manning situations from most of the military cops being overseas. I know what many of you are thinking... why are MPs even used overseas instead of protecting our own bases? Because they are protecting the bases overseas! Crazy huh? ... and then they have to hire DOD police which lack the training necessary to deal with trained killers (which MPs get).

Yeah... why don't they allow all personnel who are range qualified to carry on/off duty? Seems sensible to me... especially after this sit.

Because troops kill themselves.

Because troops kill themselves.

They kill themselves in the field with their own duty weapons too. That only happens when you've deployed a person to death or kept them at Mindrot (Minot AFB) for too long under adverse conditions.
