Washington is a company town where the company is government, like Hollywood's is movies. It's very significant that the Washington Post is getting someone who talks like this, because this is not some random reporter in some random town. Reporters in Washington see a lot of politicians, campaigns, and supporters, and size them up the way a casting director looks at actors.
