Common Core — new national education standards that the federal government is bribing and coercing states to adopt — will harm students, not benefit them.

Being implemented hand in hand with the new national curriculum standards being pushed on schools, called Common Core, is government surveillance of students.

On the Island, 37.5 percent of students in grades three through eight passed math tests in April, compared with 75.4 percent who passed less rigorous tests in 2012. In English, the number of students passing was 39.6 percent, down from 67.2 percent in 2012.

Parents and teachers have voiced outrage and concern over the mental and emotional impact of the new system on young students.

"Is it necessary to expose third grade children to that level of stress?" said Gina Rennard, one of nine speakers at the rally and a mother of three. "How do you tell a child that she's not college material?"

This needs to happen. And it's about time these parents got hit with a good dose of their own reality. Take a good look in the mirror mom and dad. Someone needs to wake up and tell junior to get off of facebook or the xbox and get with the program. Someone needs to tell him he isn't so special after all and if he wants to succeed in tomorrows world then he needs to get with it like every other country is doing with their youth. Tell him why he needs to get off his rear end and take advantage of opportunities like this to learn about what future infrastructure demands. Learn how to be a part of it and help make it happen. Change will happen either way so junior can hop on board despite the ignorance of an obsolete world view of the previous generation of consumers who were content to leech/consume off of the minds of others or he can step aside and watch it pass him by. And it will absolutely do just that.

That's the problem. Most of these parents are the very products of a consumer based/marketed technology era. They don't want critically thinking youth with the logic to ask what the heck the idea is of leaving them to fix the mess they're in without any practical reason whatsoever except that "Oh...the Republicans or Democrats did it". They want incapable followers to prop up a farce of an economy that mom and dad probably don't even comprehend by the looks of it. They want consumers...just like mom and dad. Average workers....just like mom and dad. People who are just smart enough to do the dumb work but dumb enough to keep the fodder going as if everything is AOK. Keep junior wasting his time facebooking what he had for breakfast and chomping down triple cheeseburgers with his large coke so mom and dad feel like they accomplished something relative to his freedom to be a slouch the rest of his life because that's what they thought was impoertant...continue to let our politicians keep things the way they are via the H1-B and some other kid from bumblefuck who knows where gets the job because he was smart enough and worked hard instead of tweeting what the heck some rapper or tv face is doing.

Hell yes, it's necessary. And the sooner the better. Maybe give junior the motivation to take advantage of processes and educational infrastructure that truly are relevant to change in it's most genuine form so that he comprehends the logic in preparing himself to be college material and for a degree that's actually going to be worth something. Let me tell you something boys and girls. These idiots out there with the signs and whining about how special junior is are the ones who have taught him and supplied the means for him to be irrelevant to tomorrows infrastructure. Because they're that way too. They have helped create a system that makes it OK to be a faithful consumer with no desire to learn to create anything for themselves or others. That's right. It's all their fault for helping to make the system that way in the first place. These dolts are leaving junior with a hell of a mess and they may think they're doing him a favor with the old "We don't want to hurt little johnny's feeling by telling him he's a slacker" gag but really all they are is in denial for the mess they'll be leaving him knowing he doesn't have a chance in hell of changing it if he continues the consumer mentality mom and dad have instilled as some sort of moral zodiac mind fudge that being a good consumer of the hard work of others (foreign, I might add) makes the fuggin world go round.

Junior needs some stress if it's going to wake him up to the mess mom and dad are leaving him so may as well step up and be a part of what it takes to undo the skullduggery these idiots are leaving behind.
