I've been slowly hinting at it for some time.

It was easier in my case seeing as I did actually develop fairly slowly. Although, my dad still sometimes jumps at some of what I say. Then again, you probably would too;)

How is slowly hinting at it going? Are your parents still as anti-liberty as they used to be?

They're getting better on foreign policy, government surveillance, drones, and hemp, but they would never consider stuff like marijuana legalization, and would find my fiscal views too extreme.I'm pretty sure my dad is anti-UN, he definitely thinks they go too far.

Well, I'm glad they're coming around, maybe they won't crucify you when you finally do "come out":p

Have you come around on legalization of ALL drugs yet?:p

My dad and I agree on almost everything EXCEPT foreign policy. I've been trying to convert him since 2006 or so! He's a big time FoxNews and talk radio junkie.

So that Jon Stewart dance is how I felt when I actually got him to vote for Ron Paul in the primary last year.

got me to, i was sure it was going to be an out of the closet gay thread and i was going to see some right wingers pissed about it:) was pleasantly surprised.

now to add my lil story, as folks know i have been a huge ron paul 2008/2012 and 2016 supporter:) but i also wanted folks to not write in ron paul in colorado since they were not going to count them. I was pretty vocal about folks supporting ron paul and the issues etc told my family and father in law(life long republican) and mother in law(more democrat). Well after the election, my mother in law and father in law let me know they WROTE IN RON PAUL both of them. This was a victory since i was sure they were going to vote romney or obama. Well they did neither they wrote in Ron Paul:):):):):):) i cannot complain:) did i mention i LOVE my in laws? as rpf members know i was against anyone writing in ron paul because i wanted the votes to count. Well their write in counted in a sense romney got served live on a platter in colorado. makes me smile!! Out of the closet for RON PAUL and the US Constitution!!! Good news neither will settle for the gop establishment anymore. The gop better wake the f up or they will be fossils sooner then later.

I don't get it. What does roads have to do with being a libertarian?

it is a fav argument from status quo. That libertarians would allow our basic services to not exist example roads etc. If libertarians areelected there wouldbe no stae built andfederally built roads. That is the angle. They always try to paint libertarians as no government so no roads which is 100% wrong.

Oh, OK. Although I think the biggest obstacle to people accepting libertarianism is basically the gutting of the military industrial complex of America. Too many so-called "conservatives" make their living off it for many of them to ever accept the idea that we don't need to keep fighting wars all over the world when it has nothing to do with our defense.

"BUT WHO WOULD BUILD THE ROADS?!?!?!" is such a famous statist catchphrase by now that it's spawned its own internet memes and subforums on Reddit.

Walter Block even wrote a book on the topic, IIRC

What's funny to me is that people who oppose Libertarianism/Minarchism/Anarchism are implying that certain activities are so vitally important that society would not be able to function without them and that it is in everyone's best interest to perform them, and that no human would ever take part in those activities unless a gun was held against their heads.

It's just absurd.

“Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.” ― Frédéric Bastiat (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/89275.Fr_d_ric_Bastiat), The Law (http://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/2548001)

Saying dictatorship of the "majority" might go over better.

I still don't identify myself as being 100% libertarian, but I'm far more libertarian than my dad, and we have a lot more disagreements than we used to have. It's gotten to the point where I usually just don't argue with him about politics anymore when I'm around him. He doesn't really seem to be open minded or listen to what I have to say. He still thinks that WWII is what ended the Great Depression, and I tried to argue with him about that, but it just seems like people that age are set in their beliefs and not very open minded about opposing points of view. I've found that younger people are generally more open minded and open to changing some of their political views.
