This is downright sacrilegious.

Missouri State Fair officials and politicians on Sunday condemned the performance of a rodeo clown who donned a mask resembling President Barack Obama during Saturday’s bull riding competition.

A tempest over the incident erupted after the website Show Me Progress reported a Facebook account of it.

The Facebook writer said he had taken a Taiwanese student to the rodeo Saturday night in Sedalia. During the bull riding segment a rodeo clown appeared wearing an Obama mask.

“The announcer wanted to know if anyone would like to see Obama run down by a bull,” the posting said. “The crowd went wild. He asked it again and again, louder each time, whipping the audience into a lather.”

Another clown then apparently joined the performance.

“One of the clowns ran up and started bobbling the lips on the mask and the people went crazy,” the posting said. “Finally a bull came close enough to him that he had to move so he jumped up and ran away to the delight of the onlookers hooting and hollering from the stands.”

The account quickly migrated to the liberal website Daily Kos (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/08/11/1230561/-Obama-clown-at-the-MO-State-Fair#).

Rodeo clowns ordered to take
'sensitivity training'

In the wake of a rodeo clown’s anti-Obama skit this weekend, the Missouri State Fair is forcing all clowns to undergo sensitivity training.

The state fair commission voted Monday to ratify the decision to ban the clown in question who wore an Obama mask as the rodeo announcer asked if the crowd wanted to see him get run down by a bull. The crowd enthusiastically approved, according to local media reports.

But the state commission went further, saying it will require that before the Rodeo Cowboy Association can take part in any future state fair, “they must provide evidence to the director of the Missouri State Fair that they have proof that all officials and subcontractors of the MRCA have successfully participated in sensitivity training.”

Ok so I would never in a million years vote for Obama or support him in any way, but I do have to say doing this at a state fair is probably not the best venue.

I don't like the idea of tax payer money going to events like this to begin with, but then to use the event as a way of politicking I think it a bit over the line regardless of who it was. Imagine if it was a mask of Ron Paul would it still be okay? I can't imagine he would ever endorse this type of behavior or support anyone that did it, so ask yourself why would you? Also even if yous say it was fine, you have to think about the kind of message this is going to send to some of the people in the audience as well as others that find out later it was done.

Its funny that all the outrage came from people who were not in attendance. So, how is that their concern again?

Actually people in the audience were outraged here are some quotes:

There's bipartisan criticism of the Missouri State Fair for a gag in which a rodeo clown donned a President Obama mask, and asked a crowd if they wanted to see "Obama run down by a bull."

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, a Republican, tweeted that the clown act was "disrespectful" to Obama, and "we are better than this."

A spokesman for Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, said the governor "agrees that the performance was disrespectful and offensive, and does not reflect the values of Missourians or the State Fair."

State Fair officials called the performance "inappropriate," and added in a statement: "We strive to be a family friendly event and regret that Saturday's rodeo badly missed that mark."

From the Associated Press:

"Perry Beam, who was among the spectators, said 'everybody screamed' and 'just went wild' as the announcer talked about having the bull run down the clown with the Obama mask.

"'It was at that point I began to feel a sense of fear. It was that level of enthusiasm,' Beam, a 48-year-old musician from Higginsville, said Sunday, referring to the reaction from the crowd that filled the fair's grandstand.

"He said another clown ran up to the one wearing the Obama mask, pretended to tickle him and played with the lips on the mask. About 15 minutes into the performance, the masked clown had to leave after a bull got too close, Beam said."

Beam also said:

"It was the usual until the very end at bull riding. As they were bringing the bulls into the chute and prepping them. ... They bring out what looks like a dummy. The announcer says 'Here's our Obama dummy, or our dummy of Obama.' They mentioned the president's name, I don't know, 100 times. It was sickening. It was feeling like some kind of Klan rally you'd see on TV."

http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2013/08/12/obama-clown-missouri-state-fair-obama-mask/2642021/

Beam, who grew up attending the State Fair and attends the fair just about every year, said he has never seen anything like the Obama mask display, which he felt was inappropriate for a state-sanctioned event that receives state funding.

"This isn't the Republican Missouri State Fair," Beam said. "It was cruel. It was disturbing. I'm still sick to my stomach over it. ... I'm standing here with a mixed-race family. My wife's from Taiwan, and so was the student (his family was hosting). I've never seen anything so blatantly racist in my life.

"If an old country boy picks up on something like that, imagine what a person of color would think."

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/11/rodeo-clown-obama-mask/2641597/

I know probably the gut reaction from some in the audience was probably one of joy seeing a clown dressed up as obama being chased by a bull, and perhaps some on this message board will lean towards agreement, but we need to think deeper at times than the superficial. It reminds me of the neo-cons I debated with prior to us going to war in Iraq with their ultimate solution being "we should just nuke the middle east, turn it into a parking lot", sure some may say it jokingly but at times I think some of them were serious just out of frustration of not thinking any deeper than a nuke can solve the problem and not looking at things from another side.

Like I said in the previous thread about this topic:

The people who are saying this is racist are the same people that voted for Obama solely because of his race. To them, all the President is is a representation of a race. To disparage the President is to disparage the race.

It turns out the Missouri State Fair Commission is appointed by Governor Jay Nixon, a Democrat.

This is insanity. I hope the Rodeo Cowboy Association can file a lawsuit over suppression of their freedom of speech! The ACLU needs to speak up on their behalf.

The clown was banned for life!

The clown in question engaged in an “unconscionable stunt” and will never perform at the Show Me state venue again, the Missouri State Fair Commission said Monday, in a statement. Fair officials are also reviewing their contract with the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association, the contractor responsible for hiring and overseeing bull ring clowns.

The performance was “inappropriate and not in keeping with the Fair’s standards," said the statement.

How about senior?

http://iroots.org/2013/08/16/remember-the-1994-bush-rodeo-clown-scandal/

The actual story says it was a dummy with a mask on, not a clown. Seems slightly different. Also, did it happen at a government event like with the Obama mask? Minor but important distinctions.

A dummy with a George Bush mask stood beside the clown, propped up by a broomstick.

Cowboys in their hats and long-sleeved shirts lined the arena's fences, some sitting on the top rails, some standing right on the sand.

This bull bucked well, needing no prompting from the bullfighters. And when the bull had lost his rider, he made moves toward the fences, sending cowboys scrambling up the fence rails, away from the bull's horns. Each of the first four bulls did about the same, bucking well but choosing not to charge their fallen riders, demanding few of the bullfighters' talents.

The fifth bull was behind the gate ready to go. His rider, O.J. Jones, pumped with adrenalin and, like the other riders, shaking in anticipation, was settling onto the back of Number 117 when, up in the announcer's booth, Dusty Cleveland enunciated the name that demanded respect.

"JA-LA-PE-NO!"

The big white bull with black spots and the foot-long horns came slamming out, looking big as a pickup truck, and Skimmer Walker, his feet spread, his hands out to the side, crouched to make a move.

Jalapeno dispatched his rider before the mandatory eight seconds. Now he stood tall, his head up, looking for something to charge.

T.J. Hawkins rolled out the big inner tube, and the bull lowered his head, shot forward and launched into the tube, sending it bounding down the center of the arena. The crowd cheered. Then the bull saw the George Bush dummy.

He tore into it, sending the rubber mask flying halfway across the sand as he turned toward the fence, sending cowboys scrambling up the fence rails, hooking one with his horn and tossing him off the fence.

Walker waited.

But it had been a hot day, and bulls, like men, have moods. Jalapeno, Grant Harris' "excited rascal," called it a night, found the exit gate and, like a locomotive floating on cotton balls, galloped silently over the soft sand and disappeared into the night.

‘Tuffy The Clown’ Leads Sedalia Person of the Year Voting

http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2013/12/16/tuffy-the-clown-leads-sedalia-person-of-the-year-voting/

SEDALIA, Mo. (KMOX) - Inspired by Time Magazine’s well-known list, Sedalia, Missouri now has its own Person of the Year Award and the 2013 competition isn’t even close.

There are seven nominees but the man who brought national attention to the Missouri State Fair this summer is running away with more than half of the votes.

Tuffy Gessling, better known as Tuffy the Clown, is a rodeo clown who wore a mask of President Obama at the fair, asking those in the crowd if they wanted to see the president gored by a bull.

The Sedalia Person of the Year is the idea of KIX 105.7 disc jockey Rob Edwards. Edwards says Person of the Year titles are not necessarily about the nice guys, they belong to those who had the biggest impact and Tuffy fit the bill.

So far, Edwards has not spoken with Gessling but says he knows about the nomination because people have shared it with him on his Facebook page.

“I think that’s another reason why he’s doing so well, he actually has a lot of fans, believe it or not,” Edwards says. “I’ve met him a few times, he seems like a cool guy.”

Far behind Gessling are several popular Sedalians.

“Several people were, you know, just upstanding people in the community,” Edwards explains. “We have Bill Malone who is a business owner and just does a lot with charities. Kevin Walker does a lot in the community, takes pictures. Just a few people who do a lot with charities.”

Running second to Gessling is the Sedalia Police Department’s STING unit. Voting for the contest ends Thursday.

Edwards says that in Sedalia, the state fair is of great importance each year.

“It was a hugely hot topic around here, I mean it was national news too, but I think that’s why people vote for him, because he brought national attention, for better or for worse.”
