Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush defended new uniform achievement standards for students around the nation Friday.
...

Republican lawmakers around the nation are split over new “common core” standards being implemented in many states that set uniform benchmarks for reading, writing and math. The standards are a result of an initiative sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The American Legislative Exchange Council has remained neutral.

Bush said the common standards are a good way of raising expectations for students, many of whom, he said, are not now ready for college or careers.

Indiana Rep. Tim Wescoe, R-Elkhart, added: “I think it opens the door to federally controlled state curriculum.”

Common Core — new national education standards that the federal government is bribing and coercing states to adopt — will harm students, not benefit them.

Being implemented hand in hand with the new national curriculum standards being pushed on schools, called Common Core, is government surveillance of students.

As a teacher myself, fuck Jeb Bush. Then again his brother was behind NCLB so this should come as no surprise.

Man the "conservatives" don't even try to hide their progressivism anymore. They support ObamaCare, Common Core, Spending frenzies. WTF? It's like they are saying "we're communists, Fuck You, and please vote for me so I don't have to rig this bitch to make it look like your peers like me and you're the outcast and you give up and fall in line."

Yeah, but remember, they say the words "liberty" and "freedom" and "Constitution".... so everything is okay.

I'm a lurker on these forums that rarely posts, but this particular issue irks me enough to step out of the shadows. I'm going to a community college in Pinellas County, FL while majoring in elementary education. The s̶t̶u̶d̶e̶n̶t̶s̶ drones in my class who support the Common Core Standards (CCS) are the usual suspects; useful idiots, progressives, etc. There's not a lot of people that agree with me and the discussions concerning CCS come to a dead halt when I ask them if they agree that No Child Left Behind was a horrible failure, and if so, why would one support a more comprehensive program centered around the same failed standardized testing model? Cicadas and crickets galore.

"Bush said the common standards are a good way of raising expectations for students, many of whom, he said, are not now ready for college or careers."

That is exactly the opposite of what is being said from those who are critiquing the CCS. Here's an excerpt from a JBS article on the CCS and the issue of college preparedness:

"Current state math standards will likewise be dumbed down by the new Common Core standards. Dr. James Milgram of Stanford University, the only mathematician on the Common Core Validation Committee, refused to sign off on Common Core's math standards, stating, “It’s almost a joke to think students [who master the Common Core standards] would be ready for math at a university.” Among the states that have agreed to implement Common Core, Minnesota has refused to sign on to the math portion" - http://jbs.org/legislation/stop-common-core-in-your-state

There's videos pouring out over the Internet from parents and activist that show how the CCS undermines such issues as capitalism, Christianity, and parent involvement by means of agenda driven activities for students (Here's a link to wet your appetite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o94l2PDhIcQ). It even attacks the right for parents to home school their children by incorporating the ACT/SAT's to comply with CCS guidelines. Those parents that home school have to follow some CCS curriculum in order to do well on these tests. That being said, it is debatable if college really is worth perusing these days. The pedigree it had is being diminished yearly and it almost seems as if its a way to just enslave people into debt.

Jeb Bush’s education legacy loses luster (http://www.politico.com/story/2013/08/jeb-bush-education-2016-95401.html)

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has built his political career on a relentless drive to improve public schools – or, as he likes to put it, to help all children achieve their “God-given potential.”

But in a startling turnabout, an education record that has looked to be an unvarnished plus for Bush may now be a liability.

Long viewed as a potential contender in the 2016 presidential race, Bush has taken considerable heat from activists on the right in recent months for his support of the Common Core, academic standards that have been promoted by the Obama administration and adopted by 45 states and D.C. Several of his potential rivals for a GOP nomination, among them Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, have outflanked him by coming out against the Common Core, which many tea-party activists see as a heavy-handed federal intrusion into local control of education.
