Utah beauty queen, 3 other teens arrested in bomb-throwing case

http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/05/justice/utah-beauty-queen-bomb/index.html?hpt=ju_t3

(CNN) -- A teen beauty queen in Utah and three others were arrested Saturday morning for allegedly making and throwing bombs that an explosives investigator says could have killed someone.
Kendra Gill, Bryce Stone, Shanna Smith and John Reagh -- all 18 -- admitted to buying the materials for the explosives, making the devices and throwing them from a vehicle, according to a Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office probable cause statement that CNN obtained.
Gill was crowned Miss Riverton in June, and was set to compete for the Miss Utah title, CNN affiliate KUTV reported.
Investigators began getting calls late Friday night from Riverton residents who heard "loud pops," said Capt. Clint Mecham of the Unified Fire Authority which is investigating the case.
"The adults who were arrested were driving around in a car throwing these devices at property and people," Mecham said.
Authorities found plastic bottles that contained household cleaning chemicals and aluminum foil strewn in streets around the community, he said.
"Not only do you have to worry about shrapnel, these type of devices have chemicals" that can cause burns, Mecham said.
"This is not your average kid blowing up a mailbox," he said. "These devices, they have the power to create a fair amount of damage. They can maim or kill a person."
The teenagers allegedly throwing the devices could have been badly hurt, too, he said.
"They could have lost their lives, fingers, hands," Mecham said. "It's not a very smart thing to do all around."
Authorities interviewed witnesses in two parts of town who described seeing a similar dark-colored vehicle whose occupants were throwing explosive devices, according to a probable cause statement. One of the witnesses identified Stone as the driver and gave investigators his address.
Authorities went there and questioned Stone, who allegedly implicated the three other teens, saying they had been "pranking" with fireworks with friends, the probable cause document says.
Stone allowed authorities to search his car, where remnants of water bottles with labels and sizes matching debris at the bombing scenes were recovered, according to the document. A roll of aluminum foil, toilet bowl cleaner and several water bottles containing multiple pieces of rolled-up aluminum foil were also found, the document says.
Gill, Stone, Smith and Reagh were taken into custody for questioning, and they admitted to buying, making and throwing the explosives, according to the document.
The teens were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on 10 counts each of setting off an incendiary device, Mecham said.
All the teens bonded out Sunday night for $50,000 each, said Cammie Scogg, a Salt Lake County sheriff's spokeswoman.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sam Gill told CNN on Monday that his office is waiting for a full report from authorities to decide on whether to file charges.

Back in the day, this was just called 'fucking off'.

The article didn't say any property was actually damaged, and nobody was actually hurt. Make the idiots pick up their litter and let them be on their way, god damn.

It's no fun to be a teenager anymore. Eggs and TP are weapons of mass destruction and knocking down a mailbox is destroying federal property and will get you renditioned to a black site.

One of my favorites as a teen was the "zotter"; a piece of lamp cord with the two wires twisted together and contained in a short stick of PVC pipe. You'd go around at christmas time and turn everyone's twinkle lights off house by house by plugging the zotter into the ends of the line.... then sit in the tree house drinking peppermint schnapps and laugh as the neighbors checked bulb by bulb before realizing the circuit was tripped.... lulz; I miss being a kid. Don't try this at home... probably counts as terrorism these days.

Me and my brothers used to have this grove of trees that we called "the playpen". They just old enough to allow us to climb to the top without breaking, but young enough that you could get them to bend over far enough to grab another one. We used to have a blast for hours playing tag and never touch the ground. :D

My nephews made one of these, not to say my sons haven't, but at least my sons are bright enough not to go look at it closely when it didn't blow up right away. One of my nephews ended up being taken by ambulance to a bigger medical center about 150 miles away to be treated for the chemical burns to his eyes. Luckily there was no permanent damage. I doubt he learned anything from it though.

Drano contains sodium hydroxide, NaOH.
When you mix drano and aluminum foil, the following reaction occurs:

2Al + 2NaOH + 6H2O -> 2Na+ + 2[Al(OH)4]- + 3H2

The aluminium foil dissolves and hydrogen gas bubbles out.

Viral alerts warn recipients to beware of 'bottle bombs,' homemade explosive devices consisting of water, Drano, and aluminum foil in plastic bottles.
Description: Viral text / Rumor
Circulating since: May 2010
Status: True (see details below)

2013 example:
As posted on Facebook, Feb. 21, 2013:

PLEASE READ. WILL NOT HURT TO AND FORWARD.
Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!!
If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.
Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.
Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!
No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.
Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this.

2010 example:
Email text contributed by Elliott F., May 20, 2010:

Subject: Fw: Good information for everyone!
Check SNOPES...............
Good safety info that I never heard of; be careful and watch the video if you don't believe it.
Pay attention to this.
1. a plastic bottle with a cap.
2. a little Drano.
3. a little water.
4. a small piece of foil.
5. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!
6. No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc..
People are finding these bombs in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the trash. But, you'll never make it!!! It takes about 30 seconds to blow after you move the thing.
See "SNOPES" below....it's true. This happened a few days ago...April 27, as a matter of fact.

Analysis: Homemade "bottle bombs" have been around for at least two decades, though they've been known by a variety of different names, including "acid bombs," "Drano bombs," "works bombs," "pressure bombs," and "MacGyver bombs." Any number of YouTube videos (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bottle+bomb&page=&utm_source=opensearch) demonstrate how to construct and detonate them. Because they're made with common household ingredients they're a favorite of teenage pranksters, but police warn that the devices are unpredictable and dangerous. Would-be bottle bomb makers need to be aware that if caught they can be charged with a felony. Penalties can be quite severe if injuries or property damage result.
The way a bottle bomb works is simple. When the aluminum foil comes into contact with the Drano solution a strong chemical reaction occurs, releasing a gas which causes pressure to build up inside the plastic bottle, which eventually explodes. The caustic, boiling liquid thrown off by such an explosion can cause second- or third-degree burns and/or blindness.
News reports of bottle bomb incidents (in which the activity is sometimes described as a "fad") have cropped up regularly since the early 1990s. An article published in the Los Angeles Times in March 1991 claimed at least eight adolescents had been injured in glass bottle bomb explosions after learning how to construct the devices from an episode of the TV show MacGyver.
The 2010 warnings were prompted by specific incidents reported in April 2010, including the discovery of bottle bombs left in the yards (http://www.annarbor.com/news/police-warn-of-pop-bottle-bombs-left-in-yards-in-york-township/) of two houses in York Township, Michigan and a "rash" of attempted mailbox bombings (http://www.eagletribune.com/local/x993511496/Reward-offered-after-devices-found-in-mailboxes) in Methuen, Massachusetts.
New alerts began circulating via social media in February 2013 after a rash of Drano bomb mailbox explosions (http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2013/01/23/2247145/kennewick-police-investigating.html) in Kennewick, Washington and the arrest of three people accused of setting off a bottle bomb in Commerce, Georgia.

"Shrapnel"

Lmao. What a joke of an article.

They aren't explosives any more than putting a Mentos into a Coca Cola or baking soda and vinegar. As I recall, from the thread where the student was expelled and charged for making one near school, this was a common defense used. (that they aren't explosive) Common sense should be used. The so called explosive expert or investigator is a goddamn moron.

Throwing one at someone is assault. It isn't making explosives or any of the other charges they try to ruin lives with.

I wonder if we can make it through winter without a snowball shrapnel bomb arrest article (there might be tiny bits of gravel in there which would qualify as shrapnel to these people)??? It's past ridiculous.

We used to use the surgical tubing to launch water balloons. I'm sure those would be considered mortar fire these days.

I'm curious how many BTU's you get out of this reaction. Might be an interesting off-grid heating system; the exothermic reaction alone could heat and thermosiphon circulate water through a hydronic system, and the Hydrogen could be captured under light pressure and also burned for heat. You'd just need a source of wood ash (lye) and scrap aluminum. Something tells me a set of aluminum rims would last quite a while.

Great point. Reminds me of the bullshit episode where they had people signing a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi3erdgVVTw).

I think you could takeover a plane these days with a straw, a wad of paper and a good amount of saliva.
