I am from The Netherlands and here we can choose even at the moment we vote.
Can anyone explain what's the point of registering?
Thx in advanced,

The political parties have corrupted our system.
The main reason to register now is so we can vote in a party's internal primary. That way, we can help choose a party's candidate before the general election, which is when the president is chosen.
Sarcastic answer: So people who will vote the "wrong" way can be purged from the rolls before the election. (I.e., Ohio in 2004)
Better answer: To prevent someone from voting in multiple jurisdictions. To be eligible to vote, you need to be a resident a certain # of days before the election.
