-t I wonder if war causes assaults, rapes and murders? (rhetorical). I doubt they factor in all possible variables. That's not to say environmental conditions don't stress people. If one wanted to put forth the effort, s/he could probably link the growth of public education and assaults, rapes and murders.

One of the first things we learn in econometrics is that correlation does not equal causation. If you believe that it is that important of a factor then let me just tell you also that as the rate of ice cream consumption goes up, so does crime.
