North Pole Melting Leaves Small Lake At The Top Of The World (VIDEO)

The North Pole probably looks a bit different than you would expect right now. Because, at this very moment, it's actually a lake.

The time-lapse video below comes from a webcam set up by the North Pole Environmental Observatory that has monitored the state of Arctic sea ice since the spring of 2000. Surprisingly, the pole has been melting since at least 2002, according to photos on the project's website.

July is usually the warmest month in the area, but temperatures were 1 to 3 degrees Celsius above average this year. The shallow lake you see at the pole is made of meltwater sitting on top of a layer of ice, according to the observatory.
Arctic sea ice has become a noticeable victim of climate change. The area of ice cover expands and contracts every year with the change in seasons, but last summer's minimum extent was the lowest on record and this year's maximum winter coverage was the sixth-lowest since satellite observations began in the 1970s.

Will have to cancel north pole skiing expedition this summer.

Man-made climate change.

I doubt there is anyone that says the climate isn't changing. Of course the climate changes over time.

Man-made climate change.

North Pole lake view does not seem to be entirely due to $400/gallon gas burnt in Afghanistan for years or recent fires across thousands of acres.

PS I have very little knowledge of science behind climate change claims/counter views.

I'm more worried about the loss of bees than I am about climate change.

Without sounding too skeptical, that pool of water does seem very nicely located to take that picture.. It's not too big, the edges are clearly visible and it just happens to be right where they put an observatory or something.

Aren't there other arctic/antarctic areas that are building up ice?

Right, but I believe that is 'the wrong kind' of ice..

^This^ It looks like that stupid polar bear picture that was going around. I am not doubting that climate change is happening (I really don't want to get into that conversation when there are so many more bigger fish to fry) but I think this picture is trying to pull on some climate change heart strings.

I liked the North Pole better 20,000 years ago when it extended down to about the 38th Parallel covering eastern North America under up to about a mile of ice.

Damn you Global Warming!

A blink of an eye, geologically.

My home was under hundreds of feet of glacier.

Yep,there have been four ice ages over the last 400,000 years, another geological eye blink, separated by only tiny stretches when the climate is as temperate as it is right now.

But, then, the dinosaurs started driving V-8 muscle cars. We've been down this road before.

I think AGW can be solved by Electric cars and free market mechanisms. No need for the state to kill us.

Santa is going to need a swimsuit.

We broke the all-time record where I live too. It was 100 in midcoast Maine this summer.

there have been long periods- hundreds of thousands of years before industrialization that the earth had no polar caps at all and median temps were way higher than today.
but hey, if this is the freak show that keeps you from focusing on the criminals stealing from you and your children in d.c.

I hope this doesn't lead to a massive migration from the midwest to the east and southeast (because of drought). I like having a little elbow room down here.

man caused global warming/cooling?....yep. The U.S. Military is the #1 culprit.

There, now lets move on.

Arctic sea ice extent is higher than it was in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012:

Temperatures in the Arctic have been below normal all summer:

A lake in a sea? Are these people high or what? I could care less if the ice melts in the summer up there, we are only having the coldest summer we have had in many, many years. If it gets any "warmer" we are all going to freeze to death this winter.

animal belches and farts have been mentioned with ties to global warming.
it is indeed the reindeer emissions that have doomed us all!

Check out the ice cap on the planet Mars. The same thing is (and has
been) happening way out there. It could just be the sun's output fluctuating in
some sort of a cycle... need to throw another virgin or two in some active
volcano to see if it helps or changes anything.

I have no serious doubt that there would be young females willing to sacrifice themselves for this, too.
