Seems like he was left with no other option. What do you guys think of this move?

"NSA leaker Edward Snowden plans to settle in Russia and is ready to begin a court battle if the country’s migration service denies his asylum plea, Anatoly Kucherena, a Russian lawyer who assists the whistleblower, told RT.

“It’s hard for me to say what his actions would be in terms of a positive decision [on the asylum plea],” Kucherena said. “We must understand that security is the number one issue in his case. I think the process of adaptation will take some time. It’s an understandable process as he doesn’t know the Russian language, our customs, and our laws.”

“He’s planning to arrange his life here. He plans to get a job. And, I think, that all his further decisions will be made considering the situation he found himself in,” he added."

Its assimilation PR to help his asylum plea; legalese chess move prompted by his russian lawyer no doubt.

They're already calling it a "defection" and claiming that Russian intelligence was behind it from the beginning.

Obama and the establishment must have wanted it this way. They could have had Snowden back in the US in days if they really wanted to:

Why is Venezuela out? I thought he had the green light there. That U.S. airspace travel issue made no sense to me. Why couldn't the Russians put him on a military plane and fly him there?

I think Russia and the US have treaties, some open some secret, that prevent Russia from openly offering certain kinds of aid of asylum to "enemies' of the USA. This is why Putin had to say that Russia could only offer asylum if Snowden agreed not to engage in activites harmful to the USA. That sure wasn't because Putin wants to protect the USA from harm.

They're already calling it a "defection" and claiming that Russian intelligence was behind it from the beginning. They would have used that narrative regardless. It's the only card left in their hand.

He made the request a couple weeks ago. Piece doesn't say if Russia and Snowden have agreed on actualy doing it yet though.

When they emerged, it appeared more likely that Mr. Snowden would be granted his wish and remain in Russia as he waits for conditions that would allow him to travel safely to Latin America, where three countries have offered him asylum.

Nothing official yet one way or the other.

From the article jtap liked to;

A number of Latin American states say they are willing to offer Mr Snowden asylum, but he says he first needs Russian asylum in order to be able to travel because the US has cancelled his passport.

Russia has stated they wouldn't support whistleblowing (screw the "leak" terminology!)

I believe what Mr. Snowden said initially, so Russia may indeed be only a stepping stone.

And I doubt it is one. This is a game. Get them thinking he intends to stay in Russia and slip out while no one is watching.

From that link:

Mr Kucherena visited his client at the airport on Wednesday and told a news conference later that the 30-year-old would not yet be leaving the airport.

He said the application for temporary asylum had not been processed, and no travel documents had been received.
