Enzi has the single highest favorable numbers in his home state of any Republican Senator in the country. He won with 75% of vote last election. Pretty sure no legitimate Tea Party candidate would run against him.

You typically only get good alternative candidates in an open election (Paul, Cruz) or if the current Senator is unliked and very moderate (Lee, Mourdock).

I doubt any sitting senator, especially older ones become unpopular, are going to endorse Cheney. Their biggest fear is being primaried by a younger energetic candidate like what happened to Dick Lugar.

That is one motivation.

On the other hand, maybe there is more at play. Are there any people out there that like McCain anymore? He is universal poison, and he is endorsing Enzi. Makes you wonder.

Now would McCain make this endorsement by himself, or even be "in" on such a plan? Probably not. His senile old ego would probably not allow that. But Bill Kristol or Joe Lieberman could have whispered in his ear, and this endorsement came out. They would be in the know on this.
