These ones are exempted from any deal over the last lot of nominee's (NLRB mainly).

McCain appears to want to filibuster the Joint Chiefs of Staff appointment unless he gets more information on his pet war in Syria and what the US military is planning there.

-----

Rep. Mel Watt’s nomination to lead a key housing agency appears (http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/mel-watt-confirmation-vote-94421.html) in peril. The top Judiciary Committee Republican is slowing down Obama’s pick to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is hinting at another talking filibuster — this time of the FBI director nominee — in order to get information on the president’s drone program.

Even Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who was instrumental in reaching the deal with Majority Leader Harry Reid last week, said he would hold the nomination of Army Gen. Martin Dempsey (http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/john-mccain-martin-dempsey-reconfirmation-syria-94438.html) to lead the Joint Chiefs of Staff until he gets more information on U.S. military intervention in Syria.

If McCain holds this one out I can't see many colleagues supporting him. Would depend on how many votes Rand can round up so Reid can get to 60 votes and avert the lunatic's demand for War before a confirmation is made.

From the article politico links to from last week:

“He’s just got to answer the questions,” McCain told POLITICO, confirming his intention to place a hold on Dempsey’s nomination, which must be confirmed again by the Senate.

McCain aggressively pressed Dempsey on Syria during his confirmation hearing Thursday, asking him for his personal opinion on the future use of U.S. military force there.

During the exchange, Dempsey said it would be inappropriate for him to provide his personal opinion as President Barack Obama continues to consider his options there.

“It would be inappropriate for me to try to influence the decision with me rendering an opinion in public about what kind of force we should use,” Dempsey said when pressed by McCain.

“I will let this committee know what my recommendations are at the appropriate time,” Dempsey added later.

I'd support it if McCain is the first soldier to deploy there

From the article a snip about Rand's and Grassley's filibuster efforts:

-

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has his own issues with ATF nominee Jones over whistleblower retaliation allegations and has called for his nomination to be “paused.” The Senate has never confirmed an ATF nominee since the position was made to require a Senate vote, and Democratic aides say Republicans don’t seem interested in doing so now.

Then there’s Comey’s nomination to lead the FBI. He had the benefit of unanimous support in committee in comparison to Jones and Watt, whose votes were divided closely on party lines. But Paul said he has taken no cues from the filibuster deal to play nice over Comey. He wants answers on domestic drone programs in order to unstick the nomination, regardless of whether it pushes Democrats back to the nuclear precipice.

“We’ll continue holding him until we get some information. Whether or not you can use a drone to spy on American citizens without a search warrant is a pretty important question,” Paul said. “Democrats have to do what they have to do. I’m not going to be held hostage and be threatened every time.”

Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) was unimpressed with Paul’s stance so close after a bipartisan agreement and said if Paul wants answers on drones, “he should come by and watch our hearings.”

I don't think McCain can blabber on for 13 hours...

He doesn't need to. Any senator can hold a nomination or bill and unless it clears 60 votes they can't do anything about it. I think McCain is just trying to slow this down for a few weeks and force Reid to bring it to the floor and wait the agreed time. I can't see him keeping up the block not least cuz Rand will help them to 60 votes.

Did you see him get mad with Deb Fischer the new senator from Nebraska?

She was so nervous giving her opinion on immigration reform McCain pounced on her and demanded she reads the bill and every concern of hers was overblown. She stood him down. It was quite a sight to behold.
