Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters

because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content,

reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/07/27/new-salt-study-appears-to-trump-bloombergs-assertion-too-much-is-no-good/) he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.

Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/01/13/government-calls-for-stricter-guidelines-for-school-lunches/).

Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

“My father lived to 97; my grandfather lived to 97, and they all enjoyed it and somehow we’re being told that this is no good and I think there is a degree of management that becomes micromanagement and when you cross that line simply what you’re doing is wrong,” Richter said.

But Mayor Bloomberg, a salt-aholic himself, was unapologetic.

“For the things that we run because of all sorts of safety reasons, we just have a policy it is my understanding of not taking donations,” Bloomberg said.
Told that his administration recently enacted the policy (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/08/22/bloomberg-mulling-over-smoking-ban-at-nyc-parks-beaches/), the mayor was Grinch-like.

“If they did in the past they shouldn’t have done it and we shouldn’t have accepted it,” Bloomberg said.

Richter said that over the years he’s delivered more than two tons of food to the homeless. He said Mayor Bloomberg is eating away at his ability to do good.

The ban on food donations was made by an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of Health and Homeless Services.

Things like this really expose people. When someone would rather see food thrown away instead of given to the homeless, that's one fucked up individual/system. This is far from the first, as well.

The lesson here is that only government can comfort those experiencing hard times. Anything else encroaches on their power.

Shut the fucking system down! It's broken and just using up resources needlessly.

edit: Reset the system and secure liberty.

I think we all need to be able to tell Bloomberg what is allowed to and not allowed to eat. Since he is on our payroll, we should all not only know exactly what he is eating, but also have the authority to tell him what he can and can not eat on that big fat fucking payroll of his. He aint no saint. And maybe then he will get it through his thick fucking skull that these people do not have a choice of what they get to eat, and bagels are better than starving to death. Ya know, they really wanted to, they'd come down and say that starving homeless people arent allowed to eat ANYTHING because just about every manufactured food is pure poison. At the same time, it is just fine for you and me to eat, but not starving people.

Fuck Foodberg.

Monitor the fat, salt, and fiber content of their food??

I'm sorry this must be asked, but....

WHY???????!!!!

What for?! They're homeless! Who cares? They have much more important things to worry about! Like getting food, shelter, and clothing. Who cares about the "fiber content" of their food. WTF????!!!!

I don't understand this world anymore. There's absolutely no common sense anywhere. Arghhh!

My grandpa used to volunteer and run a food program for the church that he went to. They'd pick up donated food from stores and restaurants and deliver to apartments and homeless shelters downtown.

One of the biggest volume items were day old Krispy Kreme's. They'd end up with so many boxes they couldn't give them all away fast enough. It always reminded me of that Seinfeld episode. And if Bloomberg is upset at bagels he would've had a fit over donuts.

Why is NYC populated?

Because people love to boss other people around.

They'll tolerate other people bossing them around, just so long as they get to do it just a little bit more.

And this goes right here:

Bloomberg tells NYC citizens - "Suffer in pain for the greater good."

Thus, homeless dig out what is left (dumpster diving) and eat bagels out of the trash. Ok for homeless to eat half rotten bagels, bagles thrown out, but not ok for people to give homeless people bagels that are fresh and clean.

This is nothing short of criminalizing the poor for being poor. This is the REAL War on Poverty.

Mayor Foodberg: Do as I command, not as I do.

Doesnt quite cut it. Hell he woudl probably enjoy it.

Instead, I propose we pass a law where every single person that has ever been wronged by Bloomberg gets to slam a car door shut on his testicles. One slam per victim. That would be fair.

Thats all well and good for the first few, but after a while victim payouts would start suffering diminshing returns.
