LIBERTY IS RISING!

Congress has finally decided that massive, unprecedented and unwarranted surveillance of the American people conducted by the National Security Agency is against the law. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has broad jurisdiction over matters related to federal criminal law, arrived at the conclusion months after the American people reached a similar conclusion.

“We never, at any point in this debate,
have approved the type of unchecked,
sweeping surveillance of United States citizens employed by our government,”

said House fixture John Conyers (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2044581/lawmakers-nsa-phone-records-collection-violated-law.html), a Michigan Democrat, during a hearing on the NSA.

“If the government cannot provide a clear, public explanation
for how its program is consistent with the statute, it
must stop collecting this information immediately.”

“If the government cannot provide a clear, public explanation for how its program is consistent with the statute,

Whereupon NSA minions will bring Mr. Conyers into a "secret, closed door" briefing.

They will then show him pictures, real or contrived, of him pleasuring himself with little boys, or goats, or what have you.

There's your "clear, public explanation that is consistent with the statute".

Quick! Sweep it under the rug and continue Total Surveillance!

By the way, Total Surveillance by Corporations is just fine and dandy! Fuckers.

This reminds me of the stern warning the government gave me about breaking the law. No wait a minute, they never gave me any warning, they just jumped out of a van and held a dozen MP5's on me, put me in administrative segregation and denied me a fair trial. LOL never mind.

At best, a great show will be made of the furniture being rearranged - with much chin-pulling, arm-waving and "tut-tutting" - but in the end, the very large and nasty lump under the carpet will merely be moved from one side of the room to other.

ETA: Dammit! I just noticed Damian beat me to the "under the rug" reference ...

Is the job of someone like Nadler to simply supply a dog-and-pony-show appearance of a "fight against the system?" So the sheep think they are being represented? Then only to do nothing legislatively to curtail the abuses? Yet, Nadler does seem to have some history of fighting for civil liberties in Congress.

Public trials in the streets with judges and juries who are not part of the problem is the only way this is going to change..

It's already been said that they'll just move the blame around and continue on...

As well as keep the Surveillance System in place...

---

Damn, I just thought of a way they could do it legally. Sell the whole system to Google. Of course, Google probably doesnt even need it.

There was a pretty telling comment in similar news yesterday, Congress authorized something without knowing what it authorized...
Very reassuring about their competence or moral character...or both.

Bumping due to another thread just popping up about FISA Courts renewing permission for all this Surveillance, even when Congress decides it is against the law.

Changing Gears:

Now, if Congress just said it violates the law, and this decree does NOT have to come from SCOTUS, would that not make Snowden a Whistleblower, because he revealed the Govt committing a crime (definition of Whistleblower), and as a result of the Govt committing a Crime, would they not be required (not that they would actually comply, we all know damn well they have no intention) to actually STOP their Illegal Surveillance as well as dismantle the systems that are collecting information on the people without Warrants?
