And if an admin looked into it he'd see that all 279 are from places where English isn't the first language and nobody watches what they do online.
I have a tiny forum that is used by a dozen people, and having little time to moderate it, I've had to shut down registration altogether and do it over the phone, because there's a steady 5-6 people per day in Vietnam or France or Russia trying to register.

Carlybee and I used to have a message board about the same size as the one you mention and we had the same issues. Many years ago I was a co-admin of a board a little smaller than this one and I was able to determine that many of those "guests" were really Yahoo! bots.
