HBO Asks Google To Take Down "Infringing" VLC Media Player
http://yro.slashdot.org/story/13/07/16/1434232/hbo-asks-google-to-take-down-infringing-vlc-media-player

"It's no secret that copyright holders are trying to take down as much pirated content as they can, but their targeting of open source software is something new. In an attempt to remove pirated copies of Game of Thrones from the Internet, HBO sent a DMCA takedown to Google, listing a copy of the popular media player VLC as a copyright infringement. An honest mistake, perhaps, but a worrying one. ... Usually these notices ask Google to get rid of links to pirate sites, but for some reason the cable network also wants Google to remove a link to the highly popular open source video player VLC. ... The same DMCA notice also lists various other links that don't appear to link to HBO content, including a lot of porn related material, Ben Harper's album Give Till It's Gone, Naruto, free Java applets and Prince of Persia 5."

VLC Media Player - Best Media Player out there.

Whats next, Linux will be made illegal because people can play pirated shit on it? So even though you can play pirated shit on Windows (for the time being), thats ok because people paid for the thing that enables piracy? Wait, what?

HBO is using a 3rd-party system to do their DMCA's; this particular system is automated. I remember when everyone had been using torrents for over a year, they were still going after users on ed2k.

Maybe they can get Lars Ulrich to speak at their fundraisers.

Where do these people come from?

That matters less than if we can send them back.

PotPlayer supports recording clips while watching video, it's invaluable. Couldn't live without my PotPlayer!

What's next for Linux?

If it's UBUNTU maybe it's hidden spyware

Hundreds of thousands of people are using UBUNTU right now thinking they're using something that is more private than Windows.
Imagine their shock when they find out they've been tracked.

Ubuntu has jumped the shark and is tracking in 4th place for the last month:

Good riddance IMO. Mark Shuttleworth picked the wrong time to be collecting users data for the NSA. The reality is that if a corporation collects the data, the NSA can typically get it. The way to respect your users'/customers' data is to never collect it in the first place.

XFCE fan here!

The great thing about open source is that it cant ever be destroyed or dissapeared.

This is bullshit, Ubuntu is not "just as bad as Windows", in fact, I'm not sure if 98% of what you said up there is even true.

I am considering checking out Mint at some point here soon, I've been on Ubuntu for years so why not try something new. A lot of people seem to like it.

VLC rocks. Heck I'd say they really need to ban electricity. That way you nip the problem right in the but.
