"A Swedish professor of sociology has nominated Snowden for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. Giving him the prize would also 'save the Nobel Peace Prize from the disrepute that incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision to award U.S. President Barack Obama' the prize, according to professor Stefan Svallfors. He notes ultimately that at great personal cost, 'Edward Snowden has helped to make the world a little bit better and safer.'"

Too bad that prize has a bit of tarnish. Now if they would rescind Obama's.

Until Obama's peace price is gone it's more of an insult to get it but it would be a fun international middle finger to the government :D

They should take Obama's and give it to Snowden.

They should take Obama's and give it to Snowden. And then give him a second one too:)

EDIT: Something in my senses tell me this whole Snoweden thing is a hoax. Who would give up everthing to say something that is obvious.

Have past prizes ever been revoked? Obama deserves his revoked and handed to Snowden.

Not likely to happen since the prize was made specifically to support people in power, and not people who actually make a difference. The prize is already controlled, it cannot be redeemed no matter who receives it because it's already just a tool.

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena,

got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She

had an 'ulterior motive' .. She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews,

(being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she

carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids.)

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let

her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the

dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this,

she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the

Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the

names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under

a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have

survived it and reunited the family.. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped

got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize .. She was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

at least he has been nominated.
unfortunately it has more chances of being given to someone who pursues and catches Snowden,
of course then there would be a movie about it too - how the world was saved from Snowden !

I think Gore should keep his though, if for no other reason, than for his important work on the ManBearPig crisis.

Seriously though, this is awesome. Especially the fact that in nominating Snowden, this guy mentions how wrong it was for Obama to receive his!!

Wikileaks tweeted today that Assange, Snowden, and Bradley Manning all have been officially nominated for the Nobel prize. I'll see if I can find that tweet. I don't think there was any link in it though, and I haven't gone searching to see if it's true. But I assume Wikileaks wouldn't tweet it if it wasn't.

There is a pretty big list of people who can submit nominees.

According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories:

•Members of national assemblies and governments of states

•Members of international courts

•University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes

•Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

•Board members of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

•Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1)

•Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee )

http://www.nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/

Last year there were a record 259 nominees (the names of all nominees are not usually released)

50 Year Secrecy Rule

The Committee does not itself announce the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves. In so far as certain names crop up in the advance speculations as to who will be awarded any given year's Prize, this is either sheer guesswork or information put out by the person or persons behind the nomination. Information in the Nobel Committee's nomination database is not made public until after fifty years.

The prize winner is chosen by the Nobel Peace Prize committee:
http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/prize_awarder/

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.

By the terms of Alfred Nobel's will the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 1901. Alfred Nobel left no explanation as to why the prize for peace was to be awarded by a Norwegian committee while the other four prizes were to be handled by Swedish committees.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegian Parliament). The Committee's composition reflects the relative strengths of the political parties in the Storting, and is assisted by specially appointed expert advisers.
